WII SPORTS IS BEST SELLING VIDEO GAME EVER
http://videogames.yahoo.com/feature/wii-sports-is-best-selling-game-ever/1276855

According to game-tracking website VGChartz, sales of Nintendo's pop-culture phenom Wii Sports have surpassed those of legendary platformer Super Mario Bros., making the breakout Wii title the best-selling video game of all time. And it only took two years and two months to do it.

The data is based on cumulative worldwide sales figures ending the week of December 27, 2008, which indicate that lifetime sales of Wii Sports have exceeded Mario's staggering 40.24 million units.

Shocked? Don't be. Unlike most video games that can be bought at retail, Wii Sports comes bundled with the Wii hardware in every territory other than Japan and Korea. In other words, if you bought a Wii, you bought Wii Sports whether you liked it or not (chances are, you liked it). With over 45 million Wiis sold worldwide to date, it's only logical that Wii Sports would start smashing records sooner or later.

And before you brand Wii Sports a false champion due to being bundled with hardware, consider that Super Mario Bros. was also sold as a bundle with the original Nintendo Entertainment System during its mid-80's heyday. Plus, Wii Sports has been a major hit even in non-bundled form, topping Wii sales charts in Japan at over 3.2 million copies sold in 2008 alone.

A new version of the game, Wii Sports: Resort, is due out later this year.

Wow... :wow:

No big deal. As they say, since the game comes bundled with the machine you have to buy it so you can't really compare with other games.

They are comparing it with the previous best seller, Super Mario Bros., which was bundled with the NES.

But did Super Mario Bros. stay bundled with the NES for the entire run?

What an awesome Top 10 Best Selling games list.

Wii Sports
Super Mario Bros.
Pokemon Red/Green/Blue
Tetris
Duck Hunt
Pokemon Gold/Silver
Nintendogs
Super Mario World
Wii Play
Super Mario Land

hmmmmm, i'm not going to really accept this as any sort of real victory.

No. Super Mario Bros. was included when I got my first Nintendo, but shortly after that I remember Nintendo being sold without the game.

It also came with 2 controllers. Nintendo was just giving stuff away back then.

i got that machine as well with gyromite, the funny thing is it stayed in its box for 10 years without anyone noticing.

i missed out on some good ol loving.

If I recall correctly, the NES came with two controllers, the gun controller, and the Mario Brothers/Duck Hunt combo. (At least, that's what mine came with.)

That's the one I had too.

They had a number of different packages during Nintendo's run. My parents got me a set with two controllers, the gun, R.O.B., Duck Hunt and Gyromite for my birthday (one of my best presents ever). Remember my Aunt and Uncle giving me Super Mario Bros seperately.

my Famicom didn't come with any games but we got Mario bros with it, then when we moved to England I got an NES with TMNT

My brother and I spent hours playing that thing! It still works to. The last couple of years we break it out again at Christmas and play it! :yay:

No one had a CHOICE. It came bundled with it. Japan is the only one with a choice.

Welcome to the boards iXenon! :yay:

It's still a very popular game and got good reviews. It's not like it was Wii Music.

I liked the game, I played bowling and its very entertaining. I just don't think it should be marked off as the official best selling game ever due to the fact that it was bundled with every Wii sold in EU and US territories...

Ahhh...memories. That's the bundle I had growing up :woot:

I just had the Super Mario Bros. bundle with the two controllers. We did eventually get the Zapper, but the game someone got us with it was called Gumshoe and it was impossible to play with the Zapper.

I saw The Wrestler last night, and Mickey Rourke's character has an old school Nintendo his mobile home. In one scene he's playing an old wrestling game with a neighbor's kid, and the kid mutters "this game is so old."

Being the best selling game is irrelevant. Super Mario Bros. 3 isn't on the list but that is widely considered the best Mario game over Super Mario World and Super Mario Bros.

Super Mario 3 is a great game! I did play Mario Kart on Wii a couple of weeks ago! That was alot of fun!

I can't find freakin' Mario Kart anywhere. I got it for my sister and my brother-in-law for Christmas, so I got to play theirs and now I want one. I have a Best Buy gift card burning a hole in my pocket, and that game is sold out everywhere. :cmad:

:csad:

If it's any consolation, my friend said that she had a very hard time finding it as well.

yeah, everyone seemed to go crazy for it over the holidays.
