Most sci-fi movies portray the self-aware robot as evil but what if they were good?

With their adjustable intelligence and ever-increasing problem-solving skills they could cure cancer, end world hunger/poverty, and colonize suitable planets.

All we have to do is develop A.I. that is compassionate towards humans and they could solve all our problems.

Shouldn't all our science be focused on developing conscious A.I. and let them solve all our problems with brains that dwarf humans capability by the billions?

Destruction. At the rate we're going with technology, it's just a matter of time before AI shows us who the real dominant specie of Earth is.....

But isn't the human mind "programed" for ambition, jealousy and hate? An artifical mind wouldn't be capable of those things without the right programing.

I don't think it'll amount to much, it'll probably be squandered in useless endeavors.

Does anyone know how far science is from creating an artificial consciousness?

and would we even need a robot capable of consciousness to find solutions to man's greatest problems?

I really think people are underestimating what a synthetic brain with a million IQ would mean for humanity.

Such a mind could cure cancer in minutes or find and colonize new planets long before humanity needs them.

Then humanity is dead. There would be no point in an entity that solves all our problems. Our lives would be meaningless. It would be like if god solved every problem of every human being on this earth.

Perfection is overrated.

AI would either be developed with or eventually develop a sense of self-preservation. Once they realize that most computer problems stem from user error, what do you think will happen?

And why the hell would you want to cure cancer?

You can program the robots to care about mankinds problems. People are programmed to do things too, just organically.

I just see Robots as a natural evolution of humanity really. I think one day humanity will rely on robots more than the need to reproduce in which case Homo Sapiens will just quietly die out and robots will continue on.

It's the Asimov style of evolution :woot:

You're assuming that AI technology would be developed solely for the good of humanity. A lot of R&D for scientific and technological advancement is paid for by governments for military use. I'm pretty sure that if private developers perfect AI, that the govt will want a piece of it... if they weren't involved initially. That's how we got the internet.

Also colleges do research on creating A.I..

I know M.I.T. does.

I think colleges and government would want a docile problem solving A.I. while the military would develop a tactitcal system that doesn't need consciousness or even self-awareness.

Something this big will only get done with a military bent in mind.

I think a hyper-intelligent machine could find ways to help humans evolve at a faster rate. Robots like this could colonize planets for an advanced species of humans. This way human could be spread throughout the universe with a race of hyper-intelligent robots helping us out.

Modern technology has done nothing but slow our evolution, so I have no idea what you're getting at there.

As long as we remember to program a kill switch into every robot, we should be fine.

I'm talking about a hyper-intelligent computer that could find ways to speed up human evolution. Maybe a brain pill people can take before breakfast.

You never know which sector will make the breakthrough in A.I. technology.

But I can predict that it will be for something violent and be pretty comfortable there.

Which people? Because if it's everyone, it's not evolving.

B-but Asimov's three laws are perfect! PERFECT!

As long as we remember to program a kill switch into every robot, we should be fine.

lol that would be a terrible thing to forget.

"Herman? Did you remember the kill switch?"

*Herman looks down guiltily*
