Will Square ever make another Chrono game?

Too busy milking the hell out of Final Fantasy. When people realize they've been buying the same exact game every other year then maybe. The only difference I see is that the main character finally crossed over and grew breasts.

Download an SNES emulator right now. Then download Chrono Trigger. You won't regret it.

There are no plans for additional titles in series, despite a 2001 statement from Hironobu Sakaguchi that the development team of Chrono Cross wanted to make a new Chrono game and that script ideas were being considered.[58] The same year, Square applied for a trademark for the names "Chrono Break" and "Chrono Brake" in the United States and Japan, respectively. However, the United States trademark was dropped in 2003[59] and no new titles have gone into development as of July, 2006.

So I guess that answers that,

Both Chrono games are arguably not only the finest RPGs, but also the greatest games ever made.

Man, I've tried. They never work for me. :o

I didn't care for Chrono Cross. One of the great aspects of Chrono Trigger was it was simple, yet incredibly deep at the same time. Cross was just complicated for the sake of being complicated.

Actually I loved Cross for that very same reason - it had a very sophisticated and unconventional storyline. The game's novel implementation of the alternate dimensions concept was to me, a breath of fresh air when the RPG genre on the PS1 started to become stale and formulaic with every other game vying to become the next Final Fantasy. I can't really explain what it is per se, but all the elements of Chrono Cross (the beautiful music, the colorful visuals, the gameplay, the characters) all combine to give the game a kind of heart and soul I've yet to see in a videogame to this day.

I agree. Also the fact that it had such a layered and deep story allowed for different experiences in the game. I had actually never played Chrono Trigger before I played Chrono Cross, and I loved Cross' story; however, After playing Chrono Trigger and then replaying Cross I got much more out of the story, more than I have from any other sequel/prequel that has totally new characters and whatnot.

Also, IMO it has one of the best RPG battle systems ever...

Chrono Cross is, in my opinion, the greatest game ever made, tied with Grim Fandango. Easily the best battle system in an RPG. The only problem is that you have to play Chrono Trigger to fully appreciate its greatness. However, this is not a problem at all, since Chrono Trigger is amazing as well.

A Chrono Cross Remaster Is Reportedly On the Way - IGN

Remember that "big remake" PlayStation was reportedly going to announce around this coming Christmas? Good news, JRPG fans: it might be beloved Square Enix classic Chrono Cross.

According Xbox Era's Nick Baker on a recent podcast, the reported "big remake" mentioned by folk singer Éabha McMahon on an Irish radio station back in October is indeed a remaster of the sequel/spin-off to Chrono Trigger from the original PlayStation era, and what's more, Baker's sources tell him that it will be "multi-platform" as opposed to PlayStation exclusive.

Notably, a Chrono Cross Remaster was also among the numerous titles listed in Nvidia's GeForce Now game leak back in September. Though that list has thus far been hit-or-miss as to accuracy and Nvidia has claimed the titles were "speculative," some of the games in that leak have turned out to be real, like the GTA Trilogy Remaster.

If it's a remake I doubt it'll be as big budget as the FFVII Remake. Maybe more like Trials of Mana or in-between.

As an HD remaster I expect even less changes.

As far as my opinion of the old PlayStation game, it was a decent game for its time but not a good Chrono Trigger sequel. The battle system is slow by today's standards and there was too many playable characters (many dozens) that were not very unique. Such an important loose thread from Chrono Trigger
the search for Ms. Schala - Magus's sister - and what happened to her
deserved a better execution
Kid is literally Schala clone - And then the original Schala is only found at the very end
so maybe if it's a reimagining type of remake they can smooth out the story issues which overall was a bit incoherent. It's a much weirder game than Chrono Trigger though the music is still great.

In retrospect, the real problem with Chrono Cross, or any attempt at a sequel, is that the original Chrono Trigger was the video game equivalent of a "supergroup" album. It was essentially "What if the greatest minds at Squaresoft and Enix combined to make a game?" and the answer was "Well that would be awesome!" Only, you can't duplicate that magic, especially not when the main person who seemed to want to do so was hardly the primary creative influence. Or, Chrono Cross was a Masato Kato game, but Chrono Trigger was not, it was a Sakugachi/Horii/Toriyama game ( along with a bunch of other important influences! ).

Honestly, of the "lesser" names, I strongly suspect that Tetsuya Takahashi was actually the more important, or at least the most influenced by his work on Chrono Trigger. At least to me, both Xenogears and Xenoblade 1 feel a lot more like spiritual sequels to Chrono Trigger than Chrono Cross did.

Most likely not. At best I can see them attempt a remake of the original game (or outsource it to some external studio). But their hands are full now with FF7 remake, FF16 and all that useless crap they've announced recently.

I would be fine with a decent quality remaster, maybe done by the people who did the SaGa remasters. Those were all good about updating the graphic resolution while keeping the same style as the original.

Chrono Cross remaster announced as Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition for most big platforms to play it on:

It's not much of a remaster much like the Final Fantasy VIII remaster that was released some years ago where the character models were upgraded and not much else.

"CHRONO CROSS: THE RADICAL DREAMERS EDITION ANNOUNCED FOR PLAYSTATION®4 CONSOLE, NINTENDO SWITCH, XBOX ONE AND STEAM" - Square Enix North America Press Hub

Players can look forward to some exciting new features, such as:
  • 3D models converted to HD
  • Brand new artwork and character redesign by Nobuteru Yuuki
  • Refined background music by Yasunori Mitsuda
  • Switch enemy encounters on or off
  • Background filter feature
  • Battle enhancement features
  • Auto-battle function
  • French, Italian, German and Spanish localization now added
  • Switch between imitation pixel font and HD font
  • The inclusion of Radical Dreamers, never before released in the West.
  • Players can choose between playing with original or updated graphics

I know the dream is a third Chrono game, perhaps with an
older Schala
as the protagonist as the spine within the trilogy. Though they seem to favor a neophyte fish-out-of-water approach each time. One can only hope it would be more coherent than Chrono Cross is though with more of the original Chrono Trigger team involved. CT felt derived from the combined lineage of Dragon Quest (Horii) and Final Fantasy (Sakaguchi) but CC did not.

The announcement today also gives credence that a remake of Final Fantasy IX and a remaster of Final Fantasy Tactics had been greenlit (Nvidia leak) and should be announced so long as they are not cancelled internally.

I will give it credit, this is the first time any Satellaview content has been rereleased.

I've seen many reviews saying the FPS is all over the place on this port. Reports of dropping down to 10-15 fps across all consoles have been seen. I was going to buy this but looks like we might have to wait for this to get patched up.
