What I loved about older games was that content was unlockables such as characters, extra levels, extra skins, behind the scene footage etc. was all unlockable through gameplay and playing a few extra hours or more depending on the unlockable, instead of paying for it like nowadays. Your guys thoughts?

I wish that DLC was less prevalent in fighting games, especially when most fighting games has a smaller roster than it's related predecessor.

I was thinking the same thing not too long ago, actually.

I agree. I like the feeling of accomplishment that come from playing your ass off to unlock everything. Now you have to pay for that kind of stuff. The Arkham games are a great example. Rather than me buying costumes for Batman I should unlock them via challenges and whatnot.

I love the extra content DLCs like the massive instalments in the Fallout or ES games. Those I have no problem with. The ones where it's 'pay $5 to look a bit different' for fighting games annoys me (except in MK because I can't deny them anything). I've seen games where they want you to pay $20 or more just to make your guns look a different shade of gray. The pre-order bonuses really tick me off though. Buy it from one of a dozen places to get a bonus you can't get anywhere else. I do like what Fallout NV did with a DLC that let you get all of them a few months after the game came out.

I don't wish there was no DLC, but I generally agree with the sentiment. However, looking at it from the other side, traditional gaming is a contracting market and with game budgets getting so absurdly high, it only makes sense that publishers and developers are experimenting with additional ways of generating revenue.

I'm fine with DLC when it's done right. People often say that before DLC was around, games were "complete". DLC coming out for a game nowadays doesn't make it less "complete." There are things called deadlines and limited budgets. Often they don't have the time or budget to add anything more than it released with. Games released today aren't any less "complete" than they were in the past.

Before DLC was even around, there were a lot of games where the developers had more stuff they wanted to put in, but couldn't because companies don't have infinite time and money to get everything the devs want in. So even if DLC didn't exist, the game wouldn't be delayed or anything so that the dev could add whatever the content is. It just wouldn't be in the game period.

You'd think people would be happy that there's now technology where extra content can be added to our favorite games. Especially if it wasn't thought of until the game was already far in development.

This pretty much applies to what I stated above. If a fighting game sequel has a smaller roster than it's predecessor, it's usually because the developers made new models from scratch for all the characters. Usually if a fighting game has a large roster, it's because the devs ported over the majority of the models from previous games. Which is a lot less work than making new models from scratch.

If I don't like the game, no amount of bonus content will make me buy and play it.
If I like the game, I'm happy to buy everything related to it and give my money to the publisher.
The only thing I don't like about DLCs: sometimes we get half-finished games and then we get the rest of them piece by piece during following year or so. It makes me comeback to them over and over again. The worst thing imaginable - episode by episode type of games. Like Telltale games. I'll never pay for this kind of games.

There are quite a few times DLCs are made to make some extra cash, but this isn't 1999 anymore. It takes a lot more time, effort and money into making game content. DLC is usually what actually funds a game so they can make more... With inflation over the last 20 years, game prices have NOT gone up keep in mind...

I don't often get dlc but there are times that I'm suckered in by goodies that certain games offer like skin packs in Batman Arkham, cool guest characters and classic skins for MK and a ton of extra wrestlers in wwe games.

I'm cool with story expansions that are hours long and certain content like bonus challenges with new stuff but anything else is pretty much bs. Anybody would wish for the old days style but it is what it is now

The all time best model of DLC I've seen is Mario Kart 8. For $12 I got half a games worth of content. Six new racers, Sixteen new courses, and five or six new karts. The game it shipped with was awesome, but a year later they let me choose to add a whole heap of new content to my game. That's good DLC and even better pricing. Arkham Knight charging me to make Batman look different is dumb DLC and the DLC in COD Advanced Warfare is even dumber. $1.99 to make my gun look different? Seriously?

I remember the Horse armor from Oblivion. I never bought it but it was something like $5 to reskin the horse that could die? These days I prefer to wait for the GOTY games that come out since they include most of the DLC anyway and by that time the remainder is usually discounted.
