At the moment, we have a cable modem coming from the wall, plugging into a belkin wireless router, and then that goes to the comp.

Downstairs, I'm picking up the signal via an external USB receiver. As a preference, I'd rather have an external device than faffing around with cards.

The signal in my room is quite weak, so I'm basically looking for any suggestions in regards to router makes and models, something that allows fast download speed and with a strong signal.

No, this is a desktop PC situated downstairs, which needs to be connected to the one upstairs via magic wireless. I have my eye on a lnksys WRT-54GS, which a few friends seem to swear by.
