[Fried Gold]

At the moment, we have a cable modem coming from the wall, plugging into a belkin wireless router, and then that goes to the comp.

Downstairs, I'm picking up the signal via an external USB receiver. As a preference, I'd rather have an external device than faffing around with cards.

The signal in my room is quite weak, so I'm basically looking for any suggestions in regards to router makes and models, something that allows fast download speed and with a strong signal.

I really dig the Hawking Hi-Gain™ Wireless-108G MIMO Router with AMP Technology. It's got outstanding range and speed and if you add the matching Hi-Gain Mini Wireless-108G USB Adapter you can get BLAZING speeds of 108Mbps, though it's really not necessary and the router will work fine on it's own with your existing card. This is also one of the few router and wireless card systems that's got full blown Macintosh support (I think you run a Mac if I remember correctly, Fried Gold).

No, this is a desktop PC situated downstairs, which needs to be connected to the one upstairs via magic wireless. I have my eye on a lnksys WRT-54GS, which a few friends seem to swear by.

Regardless, my recommendation will still work very well should you decide to go that route. It's very highly rated.
