Cinematic universes are clearly all the rage these days but aside from the MCU, but are they worth the risk? The DCEU's struggles have been well documented, but they seem to have (maybe?) turned the corner. Then you have the MonsterVerse, which has had two fairly well-received films so far and has two of the most hotly anticipated films coming out in the next few years. Then of course there is Star Wars, though I'm not really sure which film you would called their expanded universe kick-off film, since they didn't really start with that idea until Disney took over. I guess for the sake of simplicity, we'll say The Force Awakens is the first film of their expanded universe. I guess FoX-Men is its own EU as well, given that the Deadpool and Wolverine franchises launched from it and it's separate from the MCU. And then we have Transformers (it counts, since it spawned a spin-off franchise), and dead-on-arrival Dark Universe. And oh yeah, that Eggsy Goes to Sherwood movie was originally intended to be the first part of an Expanded Robin Hood Universe™, but that ain't happening.
Anyway, I think a lot of this is predicated on how well the first movie was received. Iron Man knocked it out of the park, buying the MCU a lot of good will right off the bat (even though The Incredible Hulk, released just months later, was mediocre at best). If you stumble out of the gate, that can put all of your ambitious, expanded universe plans in jeopardy. So which attempt at starting of an EU was the worst one? I'll even include Iron Man here to be fair.
