Phil Spencer, Microsoft Gaming CEO: “We're listening and we hear you. We've been planning a business update event for next week, where we look forward to sharing more details with you about our vision for the future of Xbox. Stay tuned.”

I wonder if Microsoft might be considering leaving the console field, Xbox is already a platform without any real exclusives, the only thing that makes it a viable platform is the large price difference between it and a similarly powerful PC, if they start bringing their big titles like Starfield, Indiana Jones, and Halo to Playstation that would just cement it as a redundant platform.

MS could charge less for their games on Xbox platforms and make them timed exclusives. They could create a portable Xbox to compete with the Steam Deck and Switch2. There’s still some plays out there besides total capitulation where they’d lose those Xbox online multiplayer subscriptions.

Ultimately what they want is more addition than subtraction to recoup that hundred billion dollar hole they’ve spent on studio acquisitions, which means bringing their games and services also to other platforms in some form - platforms already that have outsold the various Xboxes.

One thing about consoles is they generally sell at a loss, to the point that it can take a few years for an annual subscription's price to equal the loss, and not everyone subscribes, I could see them thinking they likely stand to make more money leaving consoles behind and releasing their games multiplatform than they do from the combination of Xbox Online and selling consoles at a loss, I wouldn't be surprised if this is a test to see what kind of profit they'd be looking at selling these games on Playstation which has a larger playerbase.

He better have something good to say or that could be lights out. Could be the beginning of the end of Xbox hardware if you can get Xbox games elsewhere while still getting all the exclusives of those other platforms.

I have this tweet ready if they make that announcement.

Buying Companies left and right with great IPs but not doing anything with these IPs, was not a good strategy.
Its a damn shame.

It's the end game for over-corporatization, monopolies, and capitalism. And to think a lot of gamers were gleefully supporting Microsoft acquiring Activision. Microsoft then laid off 1,900 people. Not just a shame, but shameful.

taking more multiplatform games away from the market, that was their strategy. well, if the rumors about Starfield are to be believed, maybe things won't turn out in their favor after all.

At the end of the day, it's about "the line" and this business change will make MS even more money.

And if going third-party/multiplat will keep regulators off the back of MS, then they will continue purchasing publishers without hurdles on their way.

I’m still floored by the layoffs. Not that they happened (that kind of bull**** almost always happens after acquisitions) but the hubris of it all. Microsoft wants the IP. They want Diablo, Warcraft, Call of Duty, Elder Scrolls, Fallout, etc. Gotcha. But who the hell do you think made those games popular and worth playing? Activision Blizzard and Bethesda aren’t just machines that spit out bestselling games every few years. You need good developers to make those games what they are and Microsoft is like, “Meh, whatever. Ya’ll don’t matter. But here’s a bull**** statement about how valued you were while we hand you your pink slip.” Shameful for sure.

Massive mergers/buyouts always result in layoffs. It was to be expected.

And frankly, given how Spencer has been dismissive of consoles for a while, its not too surprising about the rumors.

which is another reason why it shouldn't have been allowed to happen.

the biggest, most powerful company in the world makes their biggest acquisition ever, and ruins thousands of peoples lives in the process for nothing more than their own greed

SEC and government completely and utterly failed here with this merger. Not to mention they leaked all their documents. Complete and utter incompetence.

There is no way this isn't monopolization and not anti-trust. Not to mention, Microsoft just acquired Bethesda.

This is just my cynical hat, but it would not surprise me if this ending of Xbox and exclusivity has been in the works for a while and that's probably ONE OF THE REASONS the federal government backed off.

as powerful as the government is, how could they possibly know what mS's future plans (of demise) for Xbox would be?

dang. it certainly is a possibility but if the feds would give mS that kind of leeway it's still just as despicable that it closed.

Just for clarification, I'm just speculating that's something that happened. I'm making a logical leap. I don't know for certain that's what happened.

I'm just assuming that in negotiations with lawyers they're like, "OK we're buying these companies but we are not going to make the software available only on our own hardware. It will be available on Sony and Nintendo products, blah blah blah."

Not to mention, they spent so much money acquiring Activision Blizzard they are never going to recoup all that money releasing it only on Xbox hardware.

yeah I know it is speculation on your part. I reacted the way I did because I think it is plausible that a backdoor conversation like that took place.

before this week, I honestly thought the acquisition meant a brighter future for Xbox (through an unfair means) with plans of making CoD exclusive after 10 years. I'm genuinely surprised that there are rumors of them going third party, especially after they closed this deal.

The problem is with this deal is they spent $70 billion on. That means they are going to be in considerable debt, so they need to recoup on that investment to please investors and shareholders.

Also why does Phil Spencer still have a job?

this is something I never understood. mS is the biggest, most powerful company in the world. they are a multi TRILLION dollar company. how could an acquisition in the billions put them into debt?? I'm not big into finance so perhaps that's why I'm missing something but I have been under the impression that they don't need to take any action after closing because of how high their net worth already is.

it's funny that you mention that ,because last year after the CMA originally disapproved of the deal, Spencer was a guest on the Kinda Funny podcast and his tone & rhetoric strongly implied that he felt like wasn't going to be the CEO mS gaming for much longer.

Makes me wonder how long a move like this has been in the works. I doubt it was a sudden decision. I'm sure they've been thinking about this a long time.

my guess is that this move has been in the works as early as 2020; right after they successfully acquired ZeniMax, they set their sites on Activision Blizzard.
