Hey guys, just wondering how everyone arranges the film collection, by alphabetical, by actor, by year etc.

I have my DVD's & blu rays separate, that's the starting point and I am a proper anal geek/nerd about my collection, it's the single most important part of 'me' I own.

So mine is...

Alphabetical / By studio / By Director / By year of Release / By Genre

Clustered by genre. Musicals get their own shelf, as do favorite animated tv box sets. Horrors and thrillers get a shelf. One shelf for "festival favorites"; artsy movies like Another Earth and Tree of Life. One big shelf includes all else, with a little section for superhero movies, comedies, fantasies and misc.

My DVDs are all over the place but my Blu-rays are all alphabetized.

I don't. It is a mess. Finding a specific DVD or Blu-Ray is like that scene from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows where Harry has to find the proper cup among thousands in the bank vault.

My movies are categorized by genre, then by franchise. For example, I have all of my Sword & Sorcery movies grouped together. Then they're organized from left to right, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey; The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug; The Hobbit: The Battle Of Five Armies; The Lord Of The Rings: Fellowship Of The Ring; The Lord Of The Rings: The Two Towers; The Lord Of The Rings: Return Of The King; Conan The Barbarian (1982); Conan The Destroyer; etc; etc; etc.

I arrange my DVDs, Blu rays, and Criterions separately but they are all in alphabetical order.

For my own amusement I once alphabetised my collection by director just to see if any film nerd friends would noticed. In general it's a mess though.

I picked up a habit of arranging things in alphabetical order from an old job.

That's about it.

I have a system. Usually a genre thing, then with my favourite franchises getting they're own space. Within the other genres/when they're not sequels etc, it basically goes by release order.

I put franchises together, and then kind of go by the people involved. For example I have all seven Star Wars films together and then next to them I have the four Indiana Jones movies, then Jaws, then the Jurrassic Park films etc. A lot of the individual films are grouped together by director.

A shelf dedicated to a specific series, genre, etc.

I have my Marvel (Disney, Fox, Sony, etc... basically everything from the first Blade onwards), Star Wars, Horror, The Golden Girls (Yes, the GG's get a shelf unto themselves,), Disney, and Anime (film and TV) shelves.

Then I break it down to Year and Franchise... for example, Star Wars goes by Original, Prequels, and the TFA (don't have the animations). My Marvel shelf starts with the Blade Trilogy and Series, the X-Men films, the Spider-Man Trilogy, etc... I lump the series together but order them by the release of the first film, and I don't separate by Studio.

I used to sort by genre, but I gave up on that. I do stick the series by each other though, that's about the only order I keep.

I have it organized by franchise in order of preference. So Star Wars then Marvel, etc. Then everything else is in chronological order by release year.

Based on what you guys have said, by the sounds of it, I'm anal loon on my order system, which makes me happy :yay:

Built my myself a new film storage unit yesterday (with the help of IKEA) to combine my film books & films.

Today I sort out the order and how they will all fit.

I had my DVD's and Blu-rays up to now separate but this gives me the opportunity to have them separately placed but in the one area of the house as such and eventual goal is to have the smaller 'spare' bedroom be the TV & Gaming room.

I have mine in alphabetical order for each type of format. Dvd then dvd with slipcases. Dvd steelbook. Dvd boxsets etc.
Then Blu ray. Blu ray slipcases. Blu ray steelbook. Blu ray boxsets etc.
Same for 4k uhd blu rays.
If I have games, dvd, blu ray, uhd blu ray, steelbooks, collectables for a franchise then they have their own sections.
Dc. Marvel. Batman. Superman. Spiderman.
Simpsons. American Dad. Futurama. Family guy. Star Wars. Indiana Jones etc.

I sort mine several ways. Most of my DVDs (I have a couple thousand) are not in their original packaging. I put them in paper sleeves and then in plastic boxes that hold around 100 discs per box.

Genre - western, sci fi, horror, WWII, martial arts, giant monsters....

Actors - these are alphabetical...

Franchises -

TV series -

Basically I've got them in about four or five different groupings: sci-fi/horror, comedy, fantasy, drama, and franchises (SW, Trek, Indy, BTTF, POTA, MCU, etc.)

I don't. It is a mess. Finding a specific DVD or Blu-Ray is like that scene from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows where Harry has to find the proper cup among thousands in the bank vault.

Same. I also have a really bad habit of sticking a disk back in the nearest DVD/Blu-ray case to me (because I'm lazy) which means that everything ends up in the wrong case. It's a nightmare when I really want to watch a specific movie but I can't find it. :funny:

Being such an anal so & so, that would send me just round the bend.

Mine is alphabetical, but when you get to a franchise they are all together under a parent name and in order of release. Like Last Crusade will come under Indiana Jones and be after Raiders and Crusade, ignoring alphabet.

….and the conclusion to all this new cabinet mucking about ? I haven't got enough room for all my DVD's and Blu-ray collection as I'd like to present it. Oh balls !

I have all my Blu-rays in alphabetical order by franchise, and then chronological order. Just easier to figure out where everything is for me. Plus I can then tell what’s missing with just a look.

My DVD’s are a damn mess though. They’re in a whole separate room’s closet mixed in with CD’s and old video games. I really need to fix that thing up, I can never find anything in it.

I sort by movies that have sequels/horror movies/solo movies/animated.

Then I have a DC section for everything DC and ditto for Marvel.
