Sign at Geno's

(AP) A City Council member jumped into the debate over a sign at one of Philadelphia's best-known cheesesteak joints that reads: "This Is AMERICA: WHEN ORDERING 'SPEAK ENGLISH.'"

During the council's meeting Thursday, Councilman Jim Kenney asked Geno's owner Joseph Vento to take the small sign down. The English-only ordering sign has irritated some activists in the diverse neighborhood of South Philadelphia and drawn national attention.

"It's such an iconic institution and business, one that is that visible for many of our residents, for the region and the world," Kenney said.

Vento, whose grandparents struggled to learn English after immigrating from Sicily in the 1920s, said his staff is glad to help non-native speakers order in English and no one has been turned away because of a language barrier.

"I don't see much of a big deal about learning to say Cheez Whiz," he told ABC-TV's "Good Morning America" on Friday.

Ummm, as I said, there isnt a spanish word for cheesesteak, hence they wouldnt be speaking spanish to order a cheeseteak, they would say cheeseteak, because there isnt a word for cheesesteak in spanish. You understand, or do you need a flow chart?

Oh ...I see. So, if you don't speak "proper" english, you shouldn't have to speak it period???

The concept does bring up a variety of issues. The first and foremost is that of communication. The basic concept behind people in a united country is that they are able to cleary express their ideas between one another freely and comprehend the information being passed long.

On the next level you have the individuals right to maintain their own cultural identity and language is of course a part of this.

The third part would obviously be the businesses right to function as they prefer to. By putting such a sign up they may very well alienate much of their clientele but at the same time for economic reasons they do not desire to hire multiple translators for whatever languages may desire to order food.

Simply put, this sign may be offensive to some but if their demand is that you must be able to communicate with them to be served, it is a small price to pay. If your personal integrity and cultural identity are more important that wanting a damn good philly cheese steak, don't eat there and keep speaking another language but also understand that you maintaining your culture and refusal to adapt in the society you live in will have detrimental effects to you as well.

What the hell are we talking about?

Hey ...I know..... why don't we let these people use the money from there home lands too. Pesos...etc.....

We are the "United" States. A couple of things that unifies a country is a common language and its currency. Without that, there is no "melting pot". These people never melt into the culture.....we end up with separate little countries....people remain aliens instead of citizens. They don't learn to have an allegiance to this country. They're just here for a job.

But on second thought....most of you would sell -out your country too.

I'm curious if you read my post at all. I didn't take any side, merely presented all the ways to look at the situation.
