Here's mine:
10: Everquest Next
- A lot of MMOs promise to shake up the genre. None of them really do. Oh sure, some of them might have some bit of innovation here or there, but you can't base an entire game around one small thing that World of Warcraft doesn't already have (but will have it patched in by the time your game is even out). From what I've seen of Everquest Next, the typical swords and sorcery stuff combined with construction-based gameplay seems like it's going to offer a legitimately unique experience, and might even be a genuine paradigm shift for the MMO genre.
9: The Witness
- Jonathan Blow made waves in the industry with 2008's seminal indie hit Braid. Now he's back with a Myst-inspired adventure game. Myst was a favorite game of mine for a long time, as it introduced me to the adventure genre. I love the idea of someone as sharp as Blow taking a crack at that type of game. Hopefully it delivers.
8: Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze
- I do not own a Wii U. I will not own a Wii U when this game is released. That I'm putting it on my list despite those facts should tell you a thing or two about just how great I think this game looks.
7: Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2
- I haven't played the first one yet. I always thought it looked really good, but it's just one of those games that for whatever reason keeps getting moved further and further back on your priority list. Anyway, I think this new one looks excellent, and I want to play this and the first one back to back sometime. I'm kind of hoping they bundle these games together and release them on the next-gen consoles in the future and I'll play them that way.
6: Bravely Default
- I've heard a lot of extremely positive buzz about this 3DS game since it's original Japanese release a year ago. It seems like, stylistically at least, it's a throwback to golden era of JRPGS on the 16 bit consoles. That alone would be enough to get my attention, but to hear that it's apparently pretty damn good makes it an easy purchase.
5: Rayman Legends
- Rayman Origins was one of my absolute favorite games of 2011, and indeed one of my favorites of the entire generation. Rayman Legends looks every bit as good, and I really wanted to play it when it first came out, but after playing the demo on 360 I felt the Wii U's touch controls translated poorly to a traditional control scheme. I'm hoping with the Playstation 4 release that stuff will feel more natural with the touch pad on the Dual Shock 4.
4: Destiny
- Bungie's ambitious FPS/RPG/MMO hybrid looks awesome. I don't really have a whole lot else to say about this one other I'm looking forward to it, and I really hope it lives up to Bungie's impressive track record.
3: Persona 5
- Who could have ever guessed that Atlus' niche Shin Megami Tensai spinoff about high school students battling the supernatural would become one of the most beloved and talked-about JRPG series of the last several years? Persona 3 and 4 were both excellent titles, and I want nothing more than Persona 5 to eclipse them.
2: Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number
- Described as a top-down ****-em-up, Hotline Miami was my favorite game of last year. It is quite easily one of the most trippy, surreal, original, stylish, and FUN games I've played in quite in a while. I'm more than a little giddy to dive back into the violent, neon-soaked world of Hotline Miami.
