"Fringe" Duo Pens J.J. Abrams' "Zanbato"

By Garth Franklin Tuesday April 19th 2011 08:33AM
Monica Breen and Alison Schapker have been hired to pen a rewrite of J.J. Abrams' top-secret project "Zanbato" at Paramount Pictures reports Deadline.
The story involves Japanese history and robotics. A 'zanbato' is an especially large type of Japanese sword, also called a "horse-chopping saber" as it's thought to be an anti-cavalry weapon that could kill a horse and rider in one swing.
Breen and Schapker were showrunners on ABC's "Brothers & Sisters" and have worked as producers on three other Abrams shows - "Alias," "Lost" and "Fringe", the latter of which they just recently signed a deal to co-executive produce the fourth season for. The pair are also said to be developing another show for Abrams' Bad Robot.

Labeling every JJ Abrams project as "top secret" has really lost it's luster. Now its just a gimmick to get people interested.

i don't see it as a gimmick. god forbid we don't know everything about a movie before we see it. i'm actually sick of being spoiled all the time.

the script involves Japanese history and robotics: "swashbuckling robots with swords" is how one insider describes it.

Exclusive: Guillermo del Toro to Direct 'Zanbato' for J.J. Abrams' Bad Robot, Paramount

Guillermo del Toro has been laying low since winning two Oscars for The Shape of Water but he continues to develop projects for the big screen while he preps Pinocchio for Netflix. To that end, he has signed on to write and direct Zanbato for Paramount and J.J. Abrams‘ Bad Robot, Collider has exclusively learned.

Plot details remain under wraps, but sources say that Zanbato centers around a young girl (between 10-15) with lethal fighting skills — think Hit-Girl in Kick-Ass or the title character in Alita: Battle Angel. Our sources initially described the character as a “ninja,” but del Toro himself took to Twitter to clarify that the protagonist is not a ninja. It’s an idea he’s been working on for years though it has never come to light until now.

Don't get ahead of yourself GDT.

This sounds awesome for del Toro. I hope he actually gets to direct it.
