Tom Cruise is Van Helsing?

So is this still happening, or...?

If this Van Helsing is more akin to Peter Cushing's Van Helsing and goes by the name Abraham, then I'm all for it. Actually think that Cruise could be a good fit [Hell, I'll admit it - I still love Cruise]; but, if it's in any way related to Sommers' bastardisation 'Gabriel' [Gabriel - WTF?!] then lets just say that I have deep, deep misgivings.

Tom Cruise as the new Van Helsing I am actually kind of looking forward to it

Confession Time: I like Stephen Sommers Van Helsing, mainly because of my man-crush on Hugh Jackman.

Well there are other movies with Jackman to fill up your man-crush.

I think Van Helsing was a missed opportunity.

I like Jackman's Van Helsing for the same reason I like a movie like 47 Ronin. It's stupid popcorn fun featuring stuff I dig. They're by no means good movies, but they're entertaining.

I have always liked the older version of Van Helsing. I found it fascinating that these monsters were afraid of this plain looking old man.

Exactly. That and I have a soft spot for monster movies good or bad.

You know if Cruise decides to do it, he won't skimp out on the authenticity. He'll have scientists create actual ****ing vampires and werewolves via test tubes. The man that climbed the Burj Khalifa spares no expense.

So much this.

I was so, so looking forward to seeing the old Universal monsters reserrected. Man, what a disappointment it was. Poor stylistic choices left, right and centre. One of the worst Dracula's of all time and some of the worst CGI committed to film.

But stupid popcorn fun is absolutely not what Van Helsing film should be, imo.

And I'm definitely not convinced that people behind Transformers or Fast and Furious are suitable choice for this reboot. This whole thing just makes me very sad.

My high hopes for great old-school horror revival are directed towards The Nosferatu remake. I love previous versions, Murnau's and Herzog's, to death and I wish this new version ends up to be stellar as well.

Nailed it. The image of an older professor type holding up a crucifix seriously is such a simple and powerful image that can easily be confused as lame on a superficial level but if you actually think about it, it's very compelling. It's his knowledge that's makes him so interesting and threatening. You don't need guns.

Though this is coming from someone who actually really enjoys the hell out of Van Helsing with Jackman.

I'd love it if Cruise used his pull to get Coppola out of semi retirement to do his original Van Helsing film he wanted to do in the 90's with Hopkins.

Would it have been a spinoff of Bram's Stoker's Dracula?

Yep! Per Bloody Disgusting:

The Van Helsing Chronicles: Anthony Hopkins was going to reprise his role as the eponymous vampire hunter for Bram Stoker's Dracula helmer Francis Coppola and writer James V. Hart. Both were going to produce. David Wilson was brought in to write.

An old Van Helsing film with Hopkins could still totally work.

I was about to say, Hopkins would probably totally be game to continue on with it.

I'd still love if Clive Owen and Michael Fassbender got involved though.

Bill Nighy could possibly play an aging Van Helsing if ever they went that route.

Christoph Waltz would be perfect if they went older IMO.
