Well, because I'd like to see something a little different in that respect. I don't know how old you are but i seem to recall that Optimus dying in the movie had a negative effect on the season afterwards and was a huge miscalculated mistake. In a word, Optimus' death was just a tad bit premature. If I were to have planned things out, I would have not killed off Optimus, at the very least have him damaged to the point of being incapacitated, or withdrawn into the matrix in a coma-like state. He'd learn the cocky, headstrong Hot Rod was the next in line to possess the Matrix, so upon awakening he'd become a mentor to Hot Rod until the time was right. Alot of people's complaints about a post-movie Hot Rod or Rodimus Prime was that he was too whiny and pathetic as the Autobot's leader. I think having Optimus live and become Hot Rod's mentor, that might have alleviated some of the harsh criticisms of the character. But i digress as usual. I say save any really big deaths of the two faction's leaders for the end of the trilogy if it gets that far.
but the thign is that we arent' really dealing with a series but rather a collection of a few short film (relatively short in comparison with the growth time used in a series etc...)

If say the mentoring has already been established in the first film so by the end of it, Prime can die and Rodimus can take responsibility, then he can go about his bit in the second film but things would get too much for him and prime can make a reappearance about 1/3 through the last instalment.

otherwise i can see prime and megatron being the main focusses of these films with the other characters just being sidelined for eye candy. also with prime out of the way it makes it easier for the introduction of new autobots and their reaction to rodimus and all. I think Prime is great overally for the show but he does put a lot of the other autobots in the shadows (personally).

I don't understand why there are so many more interesting decepticon characters especially with how mammoth a character Megatron is, they all manage to shine.

or perhaps my nostalgic memory is being bias...

Well, my Rodimus/Optimus scenario was mostly aimed at the G1 cartoon, which hindsight being 20/20 you know and not so much concerning the live action movie. I tend to go on alot of tangents.

I say the first one end with Prime getting beaten by Megatron and the Autobots making a hasty retreat to the Ark(it better be in the film.) Then we see Cybertron and a Transformer finger turning on the view screen to watch the Distress beacon from ratchet. Then we hear a voice say hold on Rachet help is on the way. Thats the end.
