355- Female Ensemble Spy Thriller

Simon Kinberg strikes again. Lmao.

I tried to watch a few episodes of “Invasion” on AppleTV and thought it was really silly and rubbish. It’s after that I then found out it was written by Kinberg!

I really do think Simon Kinberg is a hack and a terrible writer/director who only throws his name as a producer onto more successful projects just so he can have enough "street cred" to write or direct more terrible ones. Also, 83% audience score as opposed to the 27% critics score? What the hell do audiences see in this that the critics aren't?

I’m just amazed at how you take Jessica Chastain in two movies and waste her talent. Same with wasting Lupita.

The only props I’ll ever give Kinberg is for Mr & Mrs Smith, but 90% of the fun of that movie was watching Brangelina’s burgeoning tension and seeing which scenes were acting and what was real lol.

Thats nothing new. Hocus Pocus failed with critics, scored with audiences and its an iconic movie.

RT audience score is just a sampling and just ONE metric at the end of the day.

Most of them are probably just people who enjoyed it for what it is. From what I've heard, it's not that this is terrible, it's just incredibly generic and forgettable.
I guess this is one of those flicks I'd watch just for the cast, but with very low expectations otherwise.
Same here

Glad to see this crash and burn. Kinberg is a worse director than he is a writer, and he's a hack writer. He has essentially bought himself a golden ticket through his producer credits, but there is no talent to speak of. Hopefully this has crossed his name off some lists. It's sounds super mean spirited I know. But I don't want to risk his name getting attached to something interesting.

And yet it has a 4,7 in IMDB.
IMDB scores are a joke, really though, especially early on. Eventually they tend to level out in the overall rankings but you can get some pretty ridiculous results there. It's also super easy to spam, and while I'm not aware of any troll backlash to this movie, you can never tell these days.

Same. Love the cast, and can use a break from all the dense prestige flicks dropping right now to just vibe with a A-List ensemble of bad*** gorgeous super-spies. Kinberg is a trash writer and worse director, but I doubt I'll walk away un-entertained.

Also - At this point any major disparity between critic and audience scores gets my attention. Plus, the critical community lost all my trust after rendering 'Eternals' Rotten last year, compared to so many other minimum effort Marvel installments.

You are right about the early votes. It takes a while to balance things, but to me, afterwards it's much more reliable than a "yes or no" system. And indeed looking closer at the case of this movie in particular, it seems that there have been spam votes, as the majority of people have given it a 1/10. I haven't seen it and my expectations are pretty low, but it's safe to say it's a bit excessive.

Yup, exactly. Great actresses kicking ass (hopefully having fun showing it on screen) is simply what I'm wanting and expecting from this, although dodging the risk of flaws production wise, story wise, direction wise etc. And I'll be fine, even though one might feel it's a waste of talent in the end.

EXACTLY! He's had no creative involvement on ANY of the Star Wars projects he's a producer on! Dude's just attaching his name to good material to make himself LOOK good!

And on a side note, yes, the sequel trilogy and ensuing side movies and shows are great and I'm sick and tired of people *****ing about them!

Wow Fan Bing Bing looks pretty awesome for a 40 yr old chick. Didn't she disappear in china for crossing the CCP sometime back ?

Coming back to this movie, It is sad that it is doing so badly both critically and financially especially with an awesome cast.

Kingberg is 0 - 2 in his directorial movies so far. Maybe he should stick to producing and writing.

A modestly engaging, by-the-numbers spy thriller. The first half/setup was reasonably solid. But comparisons to a smart, Bourne-esque story were squandered by the back end — which got increasingly contrived (if not quite cartoony). I’d rate it in the mixed/50% range. Not particularly great, though not the trainwreck that RT’s 24%/rotten indicates. My advice: Don’t pay extra $ to rent this. But if you’re already subscribing to movie channels, it might be worth a look.
