Picard 3x01 "The Next Generation"

That's interesting, so you think the bad guys are the mirror-verse people? I was thinking maybe the founders came back since they mention the villains having different faces each time. They did it before in DS9 with the founders infiltrating Starfleet.

Before the season premiered, the showrunners did go out of their way to say that this is not only a continuation of TNG, but also of DS9 and Voyager as well. The Voyager elements are obvious, but other than Worf, we don't really know of any DS9 connections yet. So you could be on to something.

I'd be into that. The Founders are a touch too genocidal to just meekly go in peace. Plus, it would be nice to see how the TNG crew handles Dominion War business, since we never got that, aside from a throwaway line in Insurrection and Nemesis.

I think the Founders would be capable of doing it again, but their ultimate goal was always for the solids to leave them alone. The Dominion is old and patient, and if the treaty stabilized what the wormhole disrupted, the Founders wouldn’t stir up trouble, at least not on the timescale of individual solid lifetimes. Jean-Luc and friends should suspect the Founders and the brainstem parasites, but I think those will turn out to be false leads.

Better than seasons 1 and 2. There's a different feel about this that doesn't feel like Star Trek Picard but more like the Next Generation. Also the filming looks different on board the Titan to how the filming is on Discovery. It looks more like Star Trek.

Could've done without Michelle Hurd though. She's still a boring character. Why are they still forcing her upon us?

Those aliens at the start sounded like those insectoid aliens from that 6th season Next Gen episode "Schisms" where they kidnapped the crew and experimented on them. They made similar noises when communicating.

Watched this last night since now here in Australia it's moved from Amazon to Paramount. I liked it? Felt like a TNG sequel, albeit to the movies rather than the show. The Picard/Riker chemistry was clicking well.

I don't intend to go back and watch the first two seasons. I've heard enough about them and seen enough from them that I feel safe in ignoring them.

You can pretty much ignore them. This new season is like a soft reboot and most of the cast have been dispensed with. However not quite enough unfortunately since we still have to suffer through Raffi who adds nothing and could've been replaced with anyone else from TNG, DS9 or VOY and people would've enjoyed those scenes more. Is anyone wanting to watch this at all for Michelle Hurd?

So apparently this season is supposed to be like a big movie send off, like TOS had. In that context the look does seem to fit a movie version rather than a tv show. That would explain their actually being a good musical score.

I guess they deliberately didn't use the seasons 1&2 Picard theme to distance themselves from that? But I would've liked music for opening credits.

Yeah, they’re going for the Star Trek VI send off for TNG, thankfully, since Nemesis botched it completely.

there seems to be a bit of wrath of khan with the doctor and Picard dynamic. A sort of lost love, and progeny sort of thing. Not to mention the puffy collared coat.

I watched the episode for the first time today and as soon as the "different faces" was mentioned, I thought founders.

All the speculation about Beverley's son being Picard's and I'm here wondering if he's adopted and he's a founder (which is why they're being chased)

I don't think they were ever onboard with one of their own leaving the group. It would explain why Beverly disappeared for 20 years... perhaps she rescued him and he doesn't want to go back and so they've been on the run ever since.

Wild speculation here... he's probably just Picard's son lol

Having TNG cast back definitely feels like a wrap up that we didn't get in Nemesis.

Since @Perfect Cell and @Sithborg have convinced me to give this show a second chance, here I am!

My wife and I will not be easily amused. We are OG TNG fans. On our first date, she won my heart by ordered "Tea. Earl Grey Hot." from our very confused server. On our third date, we drove across Ontario to find this beauty:

Hope you enjoy it.

Okay, I am a sucker for the blue titles and the use of the First Contact main theme.

Shaw seems a little over the top evil Starfleet with the bigotry and rudeness, but I will give it a chance. The cinematography is way too dark for my taste and I don't love the look of the Titan-A. But it is definitely much better than what I watched of the previous seasons.

I do wish the end title was the main title, but always, not to be.

I suspect the usage of actual LED screens has lead the cinematography to take a more "dark mode" approach. Though, i will say, having started to watch a few episodes of Voyager again, I think the trend has been going on for a lot longer than we remember.

On I know the trend has been going on for a while. The TNG movies and then Voyager definitely went darker, but this is darker even still, at least in contrast to the LED screens. While the TNG movies and Voyager were dark, the darkness was offset by flatter lighting.
