80's R rated Action Movie Shootout - Nominations

Face/Off is bat **** crazy good. Nicolas Cage in full Nicolas Cage mode.

It's great, but I think the two actors get a bit 'lost' in their performances trying to be the 'other' in terms of performance mid-way through, I remember thinking first time I saw it, how is nobody guessing this ISN'T John Travolta's character in reality I mean. It was obvious, that a impersonation was taking place, how his wife didn't notice is just ridiculous, but I think that's the point, it's meant to be ridiculous.

Well, and also "Die Hard," "Lethal Weapon," "RoboCop," "The Terminator," "Aliens," "First Blood."

You see, as per my earlier choices post, I'm not including sci-fi tinged choices. The first Rambo certainly has both yes.

It's not meant to be subtle and realistic. It's meant to be sort of a theater of masks.

Yup, while still maintaining a truthfulness and humanity at its core.
BTW, I tend to forget how over the top the science-fiction aspect is during the second act of the movie is. I mean, you've got a full-blown science-fiction prison akin to something we've seen in "Deadpool 2."

Aye, the facial reconstruction aspects and facial mapping 'geography', if questioned, doesn't stand up too much investigation.

Which isn't a flaw, by the way, in my opinion. The movie is very clear about what it wants to be, and doesn't hold back.

....and by way, I'm not saying with that point, that it's flawed, just don't go in thinking it'll be an 'exact science', it's built for speed boats & doves via face swap whilst being 'Woo-ed', that's what you pay, that's what you get.

Terminator
Predator
Aliens

I was going to put Total Recall but just realised it was 1990. Terminator, Predator and Total Recall I saw for the first time all on the same day. The day I turned from a boy to a man. :funny:

Also Predator and Aliens are among my all time favourite films.

How many can I nominate? Anyway...

Aliens
Beverly Hills Cop
Beverly Hills Cop II
Black Rain
Die Hard
Escape from New York
First Blood
Lethal Weapon
Lethal Weapon 2
Predator
The Road Warrior
RoboCop
Tango & Cash
The Terminator
To Live and Die in L.A.
I hate you. You just made my life much more complicated.

Die Hard
Lethal Weapon
RoboCop
It wasn’t a waste mate. I loved your original list. Great way to set the mood for this thread.

Will there be a 90's follow up thread in the future, because damn there was some good ones in that decade too.
This must happen. Hunter has never failed us before. :D:

Thanks dude, glad you like my reasoning and the choices they lead too.

 I love seeing the reasonings for peoples picks, there's been some good reading on the 3 pages since I was last on, which is what I always hope will evolve from the basic premise of these threads.

Yep, I was thinking about it after I started this thread and there's definitely more than enough options to make a real contest of it.

Well, and also "Die Hard," "Lethal Weapon," "RoboCop," "The Terminator," "Aliens," "First Blood."

Yeah, John McClane, Riggs, Ellen Ripley and John Rambo in the first film are all real flesh and blood characters that you can invest in which elevates the thrilling action they are involved in, and even though the breakneck pace gives them less time you find a strong emotional core in The Terminator with the dynamic between Kyle Reese and Sarah Connor.

Terminator
Predator
Aliens

Did you instantly grow a beard and chest hair like a Wookie? :D

Watching movies like these for the first time as a young kid is like losing your virginity.

No doubt in my mind which 3 I'd nominate:

Die Hard
Robocop
Predator

Terminator is awesome, but as with most, T2 is my go to Terminator film. Besides, we have the epic Robocop vs Terminator matchup and I'm a Robocop fan. Aliens is up there, but, well, we have the epic Alien vs Predator matchup and I'm a Predator fan. :p

For a second there I thought we were nominating the best 80s action shootouts.

Aliens
Terminator
Predator

I've nearly settled on my 3 but I'm torn between Lethal Weapon and Lethal Weapon 2, I like the first film a tad more overall but I think the sequel arguably has the stronger set pieces, both are great films though. :hmm

I've strangely never got in the LH series, possibly because of my dislike of Gibson perhaps, not sure.

Did you dislike him back in the day? I get people not liking him these days after some of the things he's said and done.

Oh take away the awful displays in recent times and things said, for me, he's always been a arrogant toss-bag regardless.

Ah right, to be honest I don't think I really had an opinion of him back in his prime, he was humorous in some interviews but overall I just knew him from a bunch of movies I liked.

RoboCop takes the cake for me. Or maybe another Verhoeven classic... Total Recall.

He makes the use of blood squibs a ****ing art form by itself. And the geography and editing of his action scenes are always spot on. You can tell he pays attention to the details and realises a well constructed action scene is just as important and credible as a dramatic dialogue scene.

Not allowed TR, it's 1990, this is 80's noms only dude. Sorry.
