:super: Once herald as an American Icon of the Twentieth Century, Superman, the Man of Steel, has become no more of an icon, in the 21st Century than baseball and apple-pie. The times has pass him by and the American icons of the 21st Century, now consist of football, pizza-pie, and oh yeah, that superhero called Spiderman. Not to diminish his status in iconic history, who once played second fiddle to Mickey Mouse in the 30’s and 40’s, before taking his rightful place atop of America’s symbol for the world; Superman is no longer the flagship of D.C. Comics, which seemingly, has shifted to Batman. However, hold your heads high fans of the MoS, for a change is coming

There is not just one factor, hindering the success of the MoS on the silver screen. Much of it has to do with Bryan Singer’s insatiable need to interject political correctness and acceptance into a genre, that is rooted in different values, from a different era. Yes it’s true, today’s society is not so rooted in America’s favorite pastime, the sweet smell of candy apples and apple-pie in every window seal, the isolationist and entrepreneur’s ideals of the west, in the 50‘s, and the moral fiber of a husband, wife, 2.5 children, and a white picket fence. A Superman film rooted in the 50’s theme, today, would be unrealistic; but was it necessary to make major changes to the core essence of the character. NO. However, much of the hindrance of the MoS, stems also from DC lack of generating sales and creating and sustaining a new fan base amongst the youth. The next generation, 25 years and younger, are more compel to buy Batman and Justice League core titles, not to mention core titles from DC competitors.

Another problem with the franchise is the writing. Singer impressed on his writers to formulate a story that is conducive to today’s society, that the paying public could relate to, in it’s title character and, the situation and changes to a world he must adjust to; as well as, maintaining some sensibility to the Richard Donner films. The team failed horribly. No one accepted Superman having an illegitimate, asthmatic son, being a borderline stalker, and similarity to closet issues I won’t discuss; a Lois Lane that is emotionless, timid, and far from the tough independent thinking, NOW organization, I Am Woman character(maybe a little much), cherish by fans of Noel Neill, Margot Kidder, and even Teri Hatcher; and, a Lex Luthor, that once again, not taken seriously and is relative to comic relief, not deserving of the title “Greatest Criminal Mastermind of the Century“. Through it all, marketing a Superman sequel to the public, maybe the more difficult; but, there may be a glimmer of hope for the franchise and its fans.

Comments attributed to Dan Harris, states, “We have to have a real villain(s), that pose a real threat not just to Superman, but to humanity. We can’t repeat the same mistake of past films, saving passengers on a plane, children on a bus, and a cat up a tree. We have to have a villain(s) just as strong and powerful; yet, intelligent enough to devise a situation or circumstance, that even the greatest of heroes, may not be able to withstand.” When asked about the direction the sequel may take and its possible villains. “The basic premise is there, left open in “Superman Returns”, that will facilitate that sort of transition to the next film. The film itself was more of a reintroduction of this profound hero, to a world, that have learned to live and continue on, in his absence. So we have distinct ideas that will pick up the story from there. Although, at this time, we have not ran it by the chiefs at Warner Brothers; we have characters solidly in place now... one that may not be as recognizable and maybe introduce a new character, who existence can easily be explain by the implications of the previous film; that will allow us to create more action, more battles, and take advantage of technologies that today’s special effects can achieve.”

Many speculate that Kevin Spacey will return to reprise his role as a more serious Lex Luthor. Others have speculated that villains such as Brainiac and Bizarro are possibly prime to make their big screen debut. Bizarro the more likely, because of Superman leaving precious DNA material(blood) on the Kryptonite Island(Bizarro World) cast in space. More hardcore fans want heavyweights like Doomsday or Darkseid, which more likely will never grace the silver screen. However, there is a recurring thought that little Jason White may house the spirit of Mr. Mxyzptlk, whom could pose a huge challenge to the MoS. Neither-the-less, Bryan Singer may deliver a Superman film, that many die-hard fans are demanding. We will be watching.

:super: I do hope that SR was a good start off for the sequel to come. I want Singer to come back and make a movie that crushes the competition and brings Superman back to the hero that everyone can relate to. I want a Superman that is kind and gentle, yet able to throw it down with a tough and punishing villan. That's what made the Death and Return of Superman a great series and made the public interested in Superman once again. :super:

Is this a post, an article, an opinion...? I don't get it. There are quotes in there, but no source?

What was this? It's sounds more like one person's opinion. I liked the illegitamate kid. Superman was created to fight the ills of 1930s America. Singer's is dealing with family in the 21st century. Just throw some spectacular fights with good pacing and most of the detractors will be silenced.

Good read. Especially on how Singerman missed the mark.

On the sequel, Bizarro makes sense with the blood and all those crystals sitting on that rock. I'm also open to the kid being something villainous rather than killing him/keeping him. Some kind of SuperOmen.
I like to keep the flame alive on seeing Darkseid on the Silver screen though.
:(

This is a very good write up. That said, I think there are certain villains that would really make a campy on-screen appearance and hurt the franchise of Superman on film. One is Mxyzptlk. I really think that he is a character who really wouldn't translate well on-screen.

Bizarro is a character who on his own really doesn't do well, IMO. He's definitely not a threat to humanity and more useful as a tool to someone else. Brainiac or Darkseid would be optimum threats as both pose a threat to humanity and both have the ability to have physical confrontation with Superman. I would not use Darkseid however for a second film. I'd use Brainiac. Then a third film would follow up with Darkseid. However, I really don't think Singer has it in him to use Darkseid. It would be too overwhelming to him. He is going to be very challenged to do action scenes with regard to fight scenes with Superman. He is getting better, but still does not do fight scenes well on-screen, and Superman is definitely someone that deserves to be done right.

I agree, I don't think Bizzaro is a character that should be on his own as a villian. I like the idea of Braniac pulling the strings and also maybe one upping Luthor mentally.

Couldn't have been said better. This is certainly a good way to fix the francise and get it on the right track. We want to see great battle scenes and confrontations with great villains of equal power. Brainiac as well as Bizarro seem like logical choices and then follow this up with an ultimate showdown in the third flick against Doomsday. This should make Superman a bonafide box office success. Cmon Singer give us something to be proud of again.

The only way to save the Superman Franchise is to let this puppy die, and wait a good 7 or 8 years, and then re-start the entire saga.

Both Smallville, and the terrible SR will be a distant memory by then...

Where is this post not covered in FOURTEEN HUNDRED other threads...?

"The only way to save the Superman Franchise is to let this puppy die, and wait a good 7 or 8 years, and then re-start the entire saga."

I would be willing to bet there is a VERY few number that want that to happen!I LOVED where Superman is headed and can't wait to 09!

So this is just somebody's post? I thought since there were quotes it might have been taken from an article at some point.

its pathetic when a director like bryan singer cannot even do fight scenes correctly and the ones he has done have been primitive and rather useless

especially x2

what the sequel needs is a director who understands the character and can utilise his lead actor correctly and fulfil his potential.

Not only that, but fight choreographers should be used to plan out some great action and fist fights

an example is Wesley Snipes who together with his stunt and fight team came up with stunning fight sequences for BLADE and BLADE 2.

then when David goyer gets his way, he ruins what the first 2 movies started, he throws out all Snipes's stunt team and produces some rubbish fight scenes with shoddy camera work for BLADE trinity, quite possibly the worst movie ever seen, although not as bad as Superman Returns.

you can almost guarentee that Singer is going to have some weak, short and shoddy fight scenes that will not do justice to superman.

He simply does not have the mental capacity to understand such basic techniques and methods

its time for a change

hire someone with real talent, like a Del Toro or Raimi

Forget all this "bastard child" offspring storylines and bring us some real action and story

frankly, dan harris and mike dougherty are the worst script writers ever,
sack them now

I never, NEVER want to see Mxyzpltlx (sp?) or Bizzaro on the big screen. thats a recipe for disaster IMHO.

Yep, I don't want to see these characters on the big screen either. I hope they use Brainiac in the next film and when sets up a third film for Darkseid getting ready to unleash Doomsday on Earth. I but I doubt it will ever happen. I think we are gonna get Lex for the next sequel. :csad:

No doubt Lex will be in it, I just dont think he'll be the main villain this go round.

I can see Bizarro, not to sure about Mr. Mxyzptlk though.

Kill Superman in the next movie with Doomsday. And end this francise now.Its all screwed up and nothing can save it now. The Death of Superman. People would love to see this. You would have a success on your hands and a reason to start this francise over. This should fix things. Doomsday for Supes in 2009.
