Was just searching through old 1978 Superman clips on Youtube and came across this gem...

and it got me thinking - was there a single scene in Superman Returns which had the same impact as this segment? The look of shock on Reeve's face as he hovers in the air just after spotting Lois buried .............................. and the anger as he realises he couldn't save her and screams at the sky. Whether you like the time-travel dilemma which follows it or not, this clip was a pivotal moment in the film where Superman makes a huge decision about the scope of his powers and what he should use them for - even if it means defying the rules set by Jor El.

Great scene.

I suppose the closest analogy would be when Supes is flying off to the coordinates of Luthor's Yacht to rescue Lois, when he notices the ocean floor ripping apart, at that particular moment, you see him pause briefly as he weighs his options... save the city or save the woman he loves.

Superman lifting up New Krypton and throwing it into space. A truly, emotional and powerful moment that asks the audience to follow some very romantic logic. It asks the audience to believe that after being super-charged by the sun and calling upon all his will-power, Superman was able to lift up a kryptonite continent. Some people bought it, some didn't....just like the time travel in Superman:The Movie.

Yup. It was the climax. I was in total awe the first time I saw that in theaters, but the best part is that he knew he was probably going to die by doing that, hence why he said "Goodbye, Lois" in the sea plane. He thought he was never going to see the love of his life again. It was also very emotional and sad to see that image of 'the falling saviour' as he fell uncouncious back to Earth. :csad: My Hero.

Another great and poignant scene is when he gives that speech to his sleeping son "You will be different, but you will never be alone. You will make my strength your own. The Son becomes the Father, and the father, the Son". Pure poetry. And a cycle is complete.

I also find the beating of Superman by Lex and henchmen very poingnant, moving and TRULY hard to watch till this day. Lex became the devil himself. Brandon's acting was great there. I totally felt for Supes.

Those were all great scenes you mentioned MP and each very emotional and carrying weight.

But that scene where Lois gets rid of the kryptonite shard from Superman's back and he gets up and pauses before he decides that he has to go back was something great.

Superman was willing to sacrifice himself, and knew that he might die if he went back, but chose to anyways. That was very heroic and totally Superman in a nutshell.

That whole scene was played out very well by all the cast members.

Amen.
A decision that is made all the more relevant because of the harkening back to the death of Jonathan, the words spoken by him just before his heart attack, and the self recrimination by Clark for his inability, despite all his powers, to save him. This is the impetus for his defiance of the warnings of Jor-el, and it demonstrates that the upbringing of the Kent's created a "human" Superman vs him being an alien among humans.

I wish tho that the act of reversing time had some unforseen consequence for Superman, i.e. the releasing Zod from the Phantom Zone.
