Okay, I'm about to get a new laptop, but I wanted to understand something first because I just don't know because I guess I'm a tool.

Anyway, I currently have Charter cable internet. What will I have to buy in order to make my laptop use that internet in my house without any wires? Will I have to buy a service from Charter? Or will I be able to just get wireless router hooked up?

Thanks,

If they offer an wireless router then all you do is replace your current one with the wireless one. They can be wired or wireless or if they won't go out and buy a wireless router. Linksys makes some decent ones. That's what I use with my Verizon since they wouldn't give me a wireless DSL modem/router.

Do you know how to crypt the router so that no one can take your bandwith?

Buy yourself a LINKSYS wireless router.

I will assume your laptop will have wireless built in.

That really should do it.

I assume you're referring to Charter Communications. Some ISPs offer rental services of equipment at a small fee which has extended warranty against natural disasters. That said, you need to find out from Charter. If you plan to stick to Charter and assuming Charter has such scheme, then I'd recommend you to go for it if the price is right.

If not, then buy a wireless router should you decide to switch ISP later on.

As general guideline, firstly, you must change the default admin password as supplied by OEM, then enable WPA. To learn more about it -> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wi-Fi_Protected_Access

If you're using Windows XP then head here for more info on enforcing your wireless security -> http://support.microsoft.com/kb/815485/

To enable WPA specifically for your wireless router, that you have to refer to the manual. :)

Hope this helps.
