A movie that began the current comic book craze.

Superman & Batman, hmm, I remember Superman never was " Succesful " against '70s movies like Jaws, Aliens, or Star Wars.
If you'll notice, no comic book movie has faired well against Star Wars.

In fact, Superman was only one comicbook character in '70s and part of '80s. So where is the comicbook craze?
Well, look at it this way...without Superman: The Movie being made there wouldn't be any superhero movies to be "crazed" about!

I think Conan The Barbarian ( '80s ) was more succesful instead Superman.
Conan made 40 million. Superman made 150. How the hell is Conan a more successful film than Superman?

Batman, yes he killed the good reputation of comicbook movies ( In '90s ) thanks to Joel Shumacher, Batman and Robin flick, and the " Batnipples" ,so if you want to credit about current comicbook movie craze, give the credit to anothers comicbook characters, not Batman and Superman.
So, Batman killed comic book movies (despite the fact that Blade was released one year after B&R and did excellently), yet utter failures such as Captain America (79), Punisher (89), Captain America (91), and Fantastic Four (94) wasn't responsible for that at all?

Cconn why are you wasting time talking sense to the zombie:(

Oh and Darkman was excellent, not sure how much it effected the new comic movies though

Without Superman The Movie (78) there would be no current comic book craze or it would at least not be what it is today. Superman 78 made it possible to adapt a comic book into a movie and have it be succesful.

Darkman may have come abotu BEFORE batman but it did not have the big blockbuster bank that Batman DID.
I didnt mean Darkman started the commercial success for comic movies I meant it in this way..It was directed by Sam Raimi who showed his style ,and how good he was. Sony chose him knowing he directed that film which was a comic book style movie and trusted him for Spider-Man. And it was Spider-man that became a major blockbuster earning over $400 million in the U.S. alone , more then 3 times what X-Men did & that is why movie studios sat up & noticed the strength of comic films. So because Raimi had wanted to film his idea of Darkman, it paved the future for him being picked for Spider-man.

It doesn't matter that Spider-man made more money than X-Men. X-Men proved that a comic book movie could be serious and find an audience. Blade may have proven that before X-Men was released, but it really is more of a vampire movie than a comic book movie, so it isn't really connected to the comic book movie craze.

So : X-Men

It was still Darkman, in a 'blessing in disguise' route that caused Raimi to get his itch for a comic film and the Sony for choosing him for Spider-man. Yes Blade & X-Men, made a splash before Spider-man but Raimi made it a mega blockbuster and because of his involvement with Darkman years before. Maybe Darkman & Raimi were not directly responsible but they sure did have a HUGE impact from Spider-man and Sony choosing him because of his passion for comics which began with Darkman.

That's the prequels.

The crappy, crappy prequels.

Superman had to go up against the originals.

Y'know, some of the best movies ever made.

Big difference.

Not really, the prequals were just as cheesy as the orginals and were still big box office draws.

When you say "Star Wars" you imply all the movies, so you should probably be more specific next time.

Blade unlocked the door. X-Men opened it. Spider-Man kicked it off its hinges.

Nicely said. Lets hope SM3 ends up nuking the house and the surrounding vacinity.

it was definitely The X-men movie!!! Batman Begins just gave it another boost!!!

I don't agree at all with the X-Men, if anything I'll give the nod to Blade.

It would make me die a happy man to have Raimi announce he was directing a big budget sequel to Darkman as a nod to his earliest and original creation on film in the 'superhero' genre.

The first Batman movie proved you could take a comic book and make it dark and have a real story and not some campy piece of crap.

That's a matter of opinion. I happen to think B89 sucks.

Sucks is harsh, much better then most of what's been coming out in Superhero movies of late.

Still think Darkman had some part in the explosion in an indirect way.

Spider-Man defeated Attack of the Clones in the 2002 box office.

Spider-Man would have been a huge blockbuster anyway, unless it was genuinely crap and had bad word of mouth. The fact that the movie exceeded all financial expectations is down to the fact that Raimi made it so enjoyable for all ages, something not really related to Darkman.

No contest. Spidey is basically a tribute to Donner's Superman.

The true "blue" print for comic films.
I remember the first thing that came to my mind after I saw the trailer to Spider-man 2 was Superman.

It was Donner's 1978 Superman movie that started all comic book movies without that we wouldn't be watching the comic book movies that we are watching today.
