A movie that began the current comic book craze.

I think X-Men definately started the recent craze. Yes, Blade impacted the start of it all but it didn't start a mass crave like X-Men did, mainly because X-Men was PG-13.

Blade unlocked the door. X-Men opened it. Spider-Man kicked it off its hinges.

Very true.

Spider-Man would have been a huge blockbuster anyway, unless it was genuinely crap and had bad word of mouth. The fact that the movie exceeded all financial expectations is down to the fact that Raimi made it so enjoyable for all ages, something not really related to Darkman.

I agree with you it was Raimi's vision making the film enjoyable for all ages that made Spider-man a blockbuster. I'm just saying he got his feet wet and some experience in a comic book style movie with Darkman ,so when Spider-man rolled along ,he improved and added things he liked from Darkman and subtracted things he didn't like from his exp. filming Darkman & thats what made Spider-man what it is.

I gotta say X-men...hust cause Spidey made the most money doesnt mean it started the superhero movie craze :o

I'll agree with that so far.

So, I have yet to see Darkman (I just ordered it offline, it'll be here in about 1 week 1/2 or so) but I hear very good things.

But I don't believe that it started all the comic book "craze"...that was probably the 1960s Batman. :woot:

But in all seriousness, I would say that X-Men probably started the craze because although there were PLENTY of comic adaptations out already at the time, the studios really kicked it into gear after X-Men.

CAH

Superman started it... then slowed it down...

Supergirl tried to shoot it......

Batman dodged it, and started the buzz again...

but Batman then put it onto on life support

Spawn tried to smother it with a pillow

but Blade gave it a stronger heart beat

X-men got it back on it's feet

Blade 2 kept it there

Spiderman sprung it into the air for everyone too see

X2 gave it wings

but the Hulk and Dardevil shot it down with help from the punisher

Spiderman 2 got it back up on it's feet

while electra tried to knock it down, but no one noticed it

while the FF made it trip up a little bit

Batman Begins gave it it's second wind and it began to run again

but X3 winded that, and made it puke a little bit

while superman just gave it a sip of water.. not much help.....

Ghostrider will come, and not do much

while Spiderman 3 we make it soar again

while the Fantastic four 2 will give it a little help

The Dark knight will spring it back into the air.... for the man of steel to catch and bring it to knew hieghts

That was pretty clever...and for the most part, I agree

Matrix was a Movie, then a Comic. So its not a "comic book movie"

By definition it has to be a film based on a existing comic book.

The Matrix was originally planned as a comic.

I doubt after BB3 comic book movies will be still popular :(

Well darkman, because it gave Raimi his 1st swing at the plate so to speak, started it because it got him Spider-man

pretty good assessment. obviously, since you posted that back in January, of last year, you couldn't foresee the success of IronMan.

Darkman. If there was ever a movie that needed a special edition double-dip, this was it.

And the horror of Spider-Man 3 and Fantastic Four 2...

btw, i'll credit X-Men with starting this current comic book movie craze.

i still give it to Blade. if it weren't for Blade, then X-Men might not have been made. when i saw Blade, right then and there, i knew it was going to inspire more movies like it.......i just didn't know it was a comic book movie when i first saw it.

I selected Darkman because I think it gave Raimi a chance to take a swing in the batter's box........which ultimately got him Spider-man.

Do any of you people have links to back up what you're saying?

Uhh, didn't Superman start it? After all it's where it al began, making Batman and then so on.

Yeah Superman started it all but when talking about the rush of comic films that has been happening for the past few years, it's really Blade, X-Men, and Spider-Man that are the reasons why comic films even got to where they are now. If it wasn't for those who knows what would happen because 97 was like a black hole for comic book films with Batman and Robin and Spawn. I really like giving the credit to X-Men because not a lot of people knew that Blade was a comic at the time, so X-Men was a real big risk especially being a team in all, and it worked.

To answer the question of the original post, it was 'X-Men.'

since the emphasis is on the current string of films...yeah, it was 'X-Men.'

It's arguable that it was 'Blade,' but that was 1998, then there was nothing in 1999...and then we got 'X-Men' in 2000.

On the other hand, 'X-Men' opened in 2000 and for the last 9 years, without interruption, there has been anywhere from 1 to 4 or 5 Comic Book Films each of those years.

While 'Superman: The Movie' truly got the ball rolling on the entire sub-genre...'X-Men' started the current craze.
