I recently tried setting up my wireless lap top to connect to my wireless network & nothing worked until I turned off Wireless Security. My question is will anything bad happen if I keep the Wireless Security turned off ?

the only thing i can thing that would happen is that someone else can access ur wireless internet. which can lead to other bad things.

to fix the issue, normally you just have to open your wireless port on ur firewall settings control panel.

I am trying to get the lap top working with the Wireless Security settings on. On my lap top I entered in the routers WEP Key & the router is reading the lap top & the lap top says that the signal strength is excellent but it is still not connecting online. Any ideas on what to do ?

are you sure the WEP key you entered in was correct since even if you got the Key wrong it still says your connected but doesn't access the internet. Sometimes if its your first time setting up the wi-fi with the boradband provider you get a CD where you have to follow the on screen instructions & install some software.

Use a WEP key. Not only is it safe, but it prevents people from slowing down your speed from them trying to connect to it.

I did enter in the WEP Key & the router reads the lap top & the lap top reads the connection but it still did not connect & yes the WEP Key is correct because I had to enter it into the Wii & that works fine. Unless I am entering the WEP Key in the wrong place ?

I posted a nice document on this I think...lemme find it.

not sure if those will answer your questions .... if not post here and I will assist

Where do I set the WPA Password so my Wii & Lap Top can connect ?

I have WPA-PSK selected on my router. I am trying to change the settings on the Wii & I inputted the encryption code but the wii is not reading the SSID even though I inputted the network name

OK to answer some questions...
SSID is basically a broadcast saying "Hello! My Network Name is something!"

WEP - Wireless Encryption Protocol - dont use, its easilly hacked
WPA-PSK - Wi-Fi Protected Access with Pre-Shared Key

This is what you want, you edit your router to use this.
Type in a PSK, which is basically a password. Make sure its nice and long and its not just a word.

Then goto your PC and find the wireless network you named in your router...the SSID if its visible, click on it, then it will ask you to configure it. Set it to WPA-PSK and type in the PSK (password) That is all you need to do.

The WII has the same setup I would imagine.

It is not asking me anything password related when I select WPA-PSK

A little update after alot of tries I finally got the Wii working with WPA-PSK & SSID disabled & the Lap Top is not working at all I am inputting the WPA Keys but nadda. THe one on the router page is different then the one on the router itself I tried both & both are not working
