I've always been deeply intrigued by cosmology, and the theory of a cyclic universe (more info on the brane theory and a cyclic universe can be found here) has always fascinated me.
So to get to my question. The Cyclic model of the universe says that our universe is actually on a brane, one of several branes that inhabit an outer 5th dimension. Now, let us assume the idea of the big bang being caused by branes colliding is true; also, let us assume that the theory behind gravity being so weak is due to it leaking off our brane is true as well.
Could it then be possible that the reason our universe is expanding is that, after the big bang (or when the branes passed through one another after colliding) the universe continually expands because the gravity between our brane and the opposite, colliding brane is acting upon each other-stretching one another as they move away from one another. At some point they can stretch no longer and swing back towards one another, thus completing their endless cycle.
I might be suffering from that fact that I'm taking a more "common-sense approach" than a scientific approach, and so this may go against certain laws or something.
So?
