Reverse time from Doctor Strange was a pleasant surprise and one of my favorite responses the irresponsibility of of modern blockbusters.

I'll also throw one out for Hell or High Water's finale.

Yeah I thought the doctor strange final battle was one of the more clever ways of dealing with a villain

I also thought of The Punisher's prison fight, but the other two are absolutely up there as well! In fact, if we were combining movies and TV (having yet to see Rogue One) I might even argue that one or two of those top anything I've seen on the big screen this year.

I have a genuine question for everyone: what is your personal criteria for a great action scene? Specifically, one so incredible that you'd pick it as your absolute favorite out of an entire year with many other notable action scenes?

I ask because I saw Rogue One today and I honestly cannot figure out why anyone is suggesting the Earth Vader scene as the best action sequence of 2016. Is it just because it has Vader doing stuff in it? It wouldn't have even been a blip on my radar if there hadn't been so many people talking about the scene in this thread.

No snark intended, I'm really curious what each person's criteria is for excellent action in a film. Be careful with those spoiler warnings, and I think it's a good question for everyone- even if you haven't seen Rogue One yet!

Agreed. The Vader scene was awesome but at least for me, it was more horrifying than anything else.

For a proper action sequence, I'll have to give it to the airport scene in Civil War.

I said "Oh s't" in the theater audibly during the Vader scene. I then was then horrified/cheered at the same time. And even though I knew the outcome, I was still almost yelling in my head, just give the guy the plans!!!!

I've said before the airport scene in Civil War though is the best team on team battle not including "drones" (see Avengers, DOFP) from a comic book movie. I know it's a low bar though.

What I don't get is why people are separating the end of Rogue One. Its all one battle. It is like just taking the Ant-Man bit from the Airport scene or Cap vs. Spidey.

This all the way. That space battle is as good or maybe better than ROTJ. I'll have to watch it more times to really form an opinion on that one. Also for me I'd say both the Airport scene and final fight in CW, Batman warehouse scene in BvS, Enterprise crash in Beyond.
