I have to say this seems like political theater to me.

Every person with a high school education, and at all familiar with the law (which would include everyone in the state legislature) knows that this is going to be overruled in a heart beat.

But, no one in a state as red as Alabama wants to be the guy who voted against mandated school prayer. This is a ploy of some sort. Maybe they're trying to force the governor to veto it.

Call me cynical (regarding religious bullies).

The governor's a Republican, though. Forcing him to veto conservative legislation would only serve to make him unpopular with the base.

In super red states like Alabama, there really isn't a gubernatorial election (there is one, but since the Democratic candidate can't win, it's irrelevant), but there is a fierce Republican primary – someone might be trying to out Tea Party him.

So, in 2016 (or whenever the next Alabama gubernatorial election is) some Tea Partier in the primary can use "vetoed a prayer bill" in an attack ad.

I still remember the ads from the last ones, one actually attacked a candidate for saying he believed in evolution (was on Bill Maher's show, but you can find it on Youtube).

Doesn't have to be gubernatorial, could also work on a more local level.

I'm hoping that the Tea Party sinks itself after all the failures it's caused in the government. Likely people will keep voting these people into office, somehow thinking that sinking the government further into ineptitude will be a good thing.
