From what I just witnessed a few hours ago yep I have to agree with the man it is unfilmable, so many things were cut from the movie that it ends up feeling nothing like the original. So what are peoples opinion on this after seeing the movie?

does this really need a new thread?

Haven't seen it yet, but from what I've read MANY reviewers say, is that it stays very closely to the Graphic Novel. Oh, and there is still a Directors Cut that will be out a few months down the road, so..........

Maybe it didn't feel anything like the original TO YOU, but to many of us, it felt just fine. As for the things that were cut? Adding the squid and the backstory to that would have added another half hour (at least) to an already lengthy film. Adding Bernie scenes and the Black Freighter stuff would have been another hour.

I'm probably in the minority here, but I'm glad he changed those things. The squid alien thing never sat well with me in the book. It wasn't that it was bad, it was just sort of a "Huh?" moment at the end and even though it made sense, I still felt it was an odd way to wrap things up. The Bernie/Freighter stuff was interesting but after a while, I felt like it started to detract from the story because I didn't particularly care about the Bernie characters or the pirate story. It's all relevant to the story, but I also don't think you lose anything by removing it.

Funny thing is, Alan Moore initially thought Watchmen WAS filmable. :cwink:

it's technically not unfilmable given complete creative control and a director with the intentions of getting something nearly panel for panel on screen could very well do so, it would work better as an animated short series or a long animated filmn

It was amazing until the ending. WTF happened to the important scenes at the end??

We already have a review thread...

*Sighs* I am not asking for review's, merely asking a question. I don’t think it would help much if I went into the review thread asking this question therefore derailing it from its original purpose reviews.

No sir,

I respectfully suggest that it is you are just unpleasable. The film is flawed. It is flawed by an uneven and convoluted narrative because there is TOO MUCH of the detail and story from the original in it.

The fact is at the screenwriting stage they probably should have been more prepared to take liberties with the material than they did. With that said it was still a good movie that captured the entire essence and point of the book and kept in about 80% of the scenes, plot and characters in nearly identical fashion.

If you still feel that it cut too much, you are a fan who could never be satisfied by ANYTHING. IMO it was a good movie that could have been great if Snyder had been willing to make more risks and walk a little further away from the source. As it is, it is a good movie that proves the material was not unmountable.

A mini TV series with a respectable budget would have been ideal, in my opinion.

Of course, I'm not sure if there is ANY television network out there that would allow Dr. Manhattan to have his penis just hanging out.

Snyder did a great job and it is filmable, at least to me. I'm sure the Director's cut it is going to be even better.

Is it unfilmable? Well, yes and no. No, if the director was given complete freedom to include everything, we'd get a god knows how long movie. Yes, if they want to make a film that's just the right length, and accessible to audience members who haven't read the book.

I'm still a big believer in a TV miniseries.

An HBO miniseries would have been ideal. But in this format, the movie was fine.

Bit of both

I have no doubt that at it's core, the text is unfilmable. There will never be a perfect adaptation. We probably got the most faithful possible, but I'm sure with a more ruthless director with less reverence for the core text, and less afraid to take risks could have done a better job.

Still I'm happy with what we got. Watchmen will just never get the perfect movie it deserves. One of the great injustices of life

Yes it was filmable. The movie is out right now if you haven't noticed.

Rumor has it that all the "footage" you think you've seen is an illusion brought about by global warming.

Alan Moore is a geriatric moron, and was wrong.
To me,what he thinks is the opposite of it,but not in the same sense that I share. And it was his fault that he gave away the rights. Just because he wrote stuff that was well recieve among comic book fans,it doesn't mean I am not willing at all to let him off the hook. That is all.

Ok, the stuff that was cut out of the movie isn't at all why some people didn't like the movie.

The book is filmable, and Snyder pulled it off. Besides some changes and the wish it was longer, I don't see what else you would really want to prove that it does

Things that were cut were filmed. They will be back in the film in the director's cut.

The film is FILMABLE. Snyder made the film. Whether you think the film sucks or not has nothing to do with the source material being unfilmable. It has to do with you not liking the style in which the film was made.

I just don't think direct adaptations from great books/graphic novels have the same impact on paper than it does on film.

Take the scene where Laurie and Dan have dinner and have the discussion about Captain Carnage. Even after several readings, those last panels always got an ominous chuckle out of me. In the movie, it just didn't have the same effect.

Still, Snyder did a good job.
