Ok not the most substantial role (although that remains to be seen), he does deserve his own thread.
At least one of the older scripts establishes Green Lantern as... -
...already a Legacy on Earth, opening and closing with Alan Scott giving the monologue that sets the tone for the movie.

He's introduced as an elderly government agent of sorts, who only in the end reveals to Jordan that he once wielded the same power when he was younger.
Sort of GLs first ambassador on Earth. And a great nod to the classic comics.
It closes again with Scott giving the speech to the nation which parallels the opening monologue, as Jordan sores off into space.
It all sounds pretty damn epic.

And it's such a great part I hope it remains, however they end up playing it.
So who is the favorite to cary this weighty role?

Some of the names I've seen listed are:

Robert Redford
Clint Eastwood
Harrison Ford
Denis Quaid
Ed Harris
Scott Bakula

Any favorites, other choices?

i hope he has made the cut in the later drafts of the script. As for who it will be it really goes for when they want to say he was a gl. Was it like 40s/50s if so he should be an older guy like in 60s/70s. If its a bit later like 60s then maybe a guy in his 50s.

I think he should be in the film. I like the angle of him being a government agent. And he's kind of the cause for Hammond getting his powers. He brings him in to examine Sur's body and such. Maybe it changed.

It's Alan ****ing Scott. I'm all for an appearance. Use it to heighten the legacy of the Corps.

Interesting enough (from the original post), I could see the first three choices all saying 'Hell No' and the last three saying 'Sure'.

I too hope he is in the film and it would be great if he is. Cant wait to we find out. I agree with above poster as cool as it would be for the first 3, its doubtful they would do it. But definately could see the others likely to do it.

i would have picked Ford but he has lost his magic a long time ago. and it's not because of his age, because many of the actors of his generation are still kicking arse. hell, Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman, and Clint Eastwood still show the same amount of charisma still from their youth.

I think Ford would be great.
One cocky space pilot giving way to the next!

Redford would absolutely be perfect for the role, but if he can't be cast, then Quaid would work well.

I'm just afriad that the cocky Ford of the 70s and 80s is gone, replace by an actor who mumbles his lines.

listen I love ford, but I think his time is pretty much over now unless he can prove me wrong. Yeah, he did good in Indy 4, but look at his body of work in the 2000s. Look at his post Indy 4 movies. It's the same performance, it's the same tired acting.

I can give the man the benefit of the doubt, but it's wearing thin now. If Michael Douglas can still do work his magic with Wall Street 2 (so far), then I can't see why Ford can do it too. But people age differently..

Redford would be awesome. but you have to think about the sequels and if the longevity of Redford's age. I think they're better off with a guy like Quaid or Bruce Greenwood; dudes in their 50s.

Well that's part of the point, that used to be him. Now he's more a sentinel watching over the new guy.

I haven't seen this, but he seems fine when he's not pretending to outrun some bolder, but doing a more dramatic role instead. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bUCXtdTlUrk
It probably depends allot on the dialogue he's given too.

He's just one of many people I'de love to see in this part. I think he'd be great for the way they are playing Alan Scott though.

I actually never cared for the golden age GL & Flash, but I did like Alan Scott's role in the 1st draft script.... Don't forget to use spoiler tags, not everyone has read the leaked script.

I never considered Ed Harris in the role but I can see him in the part, nice suggestion. I also think that Sam Neil would do well .

As far as Quaid, NO for Alan Scott, but a huge YES for Martin Jordan!:woot:

I'm hoping for Sam Neil.

I do hope thought that in the rewrites, they've changed Scott's ring back into being magic in nature. Since according to those who read the 1st draft, it was actually a Corps ring.

Dennis Quaid would be perfect, imo.

If no him, than Bruce Greenwood.

Eric Stoltz

Eric Stoltz. He would be perfect for the role. Even though he's not in his 50's he's a good actor and just the right age to play in sequels.

I think the whole forum is marked spoilers . You know for people that want spoilers and to discuss therm, practically every thread here, with cast list, leaked concept art, script details etc. are blatantly discussing spoilers. The script it's villains, the time line and setting all of it have been discussed here extensively without tags long before official announcements are being made, because this forum is clearlly marked for spoilers.
Am I wrong?
There's a whole other forum marked clearlly for people who specifically don't want them.

I don't think the movie is going to belabor the differance, they have less the 2 hrs, the comics have had some 50 years and its still one of the most inconstant contrived and muddled explanations in the mythology.
From what it appears if Scott is in the film, they will give a direct link to the Corps and forgo the "magic" trapped in a meteor, landed in china, transformed into a lantern, it's the same but different ..... etc.

Yeah, and those are not very popular. Let's see what the mods have to say about that.

Yeah, and those are not very popular.

Yeah, cause people want to discuss spoilers.

Let's see what the mods have to say about that.

By all means, I hope it's cleared up, I certainly don't want to have to mark every single post here as spoiler, when it says so clearly on the forum header.
I mean for eg. Alan Scott being in the movie is a huge spoiler. I wouldn't come in this forum if I didn't want to know stuff like that before any official announcement.
But I do want to know stuff like that, and other spoileree details. And I want to discuss and debate them. That's why I'm here and not the other one clearlly marked (non-spoiler.)
So by all means, I'm not out to break any rules, just have fun discussing what we've seen and heard through the cyber-grapevine :)

The main purpose of this board is to discuss, and, frankly, no one goes to the Non-Spoilers Forum. Besides, the movie is not even filming yet. It doesn't kill to put Spoiler tags before such a big Spoiler as Alan's whole participation. Seriously. It'd be cool you to edit the first post, Mandragon. :cwink:

If Alan is portrayed somewhat younger, like in his 50s or 60s, then Dennis Quaid or Ed Harris would be great.

If he's older, as in active in the 1940s older, then I'm going waaaay outside the box with this suggestion --

James Arness

Yes, Marshal Dillon from Gunsmoke. And yes, he's still alive. I haven't read any of the leaked scripts, but imagine his deep voice advising Ryan as Hal. Heck, Arness may be taller than RR.

Probably never happen, though.

To Mondragon & dnno1, RE: The Alan Scott cameo & spoilers:

Is it a spoiler that Alan Scott is in the movie? Not really because practically everyone here knows that. As this IS a spoiler forum and clearly marked as that, this thread's title is also clearly marked as being about the casting of Alan Scott.

Let's not 'spoil the spoiler' on the fact of how the character is introduced. When IESB.net reported the Alan Scott cameo in their script review they didn't spill the beans about the way it went down. Did they?

I've read the first draft script, so this spoiler doesn't bother me. In fact I love spoilers just as much as the next guy. When I mentioned the spoiler tags I was thinking about those who haven't read the script, so we don't take take away a cool moment in the movie away from them.

Not here to pick a fight, just explaining my opinion. :D

****ing Bakula?

Hell yes.

I'd actually pick Bruce Greenwood to play him who has just come off an awesome turn as Pike in Star Trek, playing the good leader/role model type part to a tee.

Any takers on this choice?

Bruce Greenwood, Dennis Quaid, Ed Harris are at the top of my list.

Harrison Ford is an interesting idea.
