Sci-Fi Alien: Romulus (2024)

As a sentimental sidenote, Romulus will be the last film I ever see at the local cinema I've been going to my whole life, as it'll be torn down in just a few days.

So I hope Romulus is a decent send-off lol

Got my ticket for tonight at 9:00 IMAX. Pretty excited.

* I feel like Ridley Scott needs to have the franchise taken away from him at some point. I don't get why he has so much say on it now. He left it behind for decades, and now it's like he's the Godfather now?
I think he owns part of it now. Could be part of why he even did Prometheus. I wouldn't hold my breath on it being taken away from him though as long as he's still alive.

Just seems a bit strange to me. He directed it, but he didn't actually produce the original or write or create any of the characters or concepts. He didn't design the Xenomorph. Not sure why he's been granted so much control.

Undoubtedly, the Brandywine people's (David Giler and Walter Hill) control caused a ton of the problems for Alien 3 and apparently made life hell for David Fincher. The way I basically understand it, they were the ones who mediated getting Sigourney Weaver back on board the third movie, so it seems they got a long leash and leeway through that connection.

Good news, this is the 3rd best Alien movie. The bad news: bad final act. Shame cause I really enjoyed about 3/4s of the movie. But the ending, while I credit them for doing something a bit bold cause most of it is a hodge podge of Alien and Aliens but done well, it went off the rails. But still a 3/5 for me

Easily the best Alien movie since Aliens and id also say it's my favorite film of 2024 at this point as well! Just excellent all around and Fede Alvarez continues to prove he's a horror master.

And I loved the big swing in the third act too.

So goddamn close to being great. But damnit, they had to ruin it at the end. And ruin it in a way that was so, so obviously Ridley Scott messing around.

Also, after seeing the film, them self congratulating themselves on the practical **** pisses me off. Don't believe their propaganda, there is a **** ton of CG, and CG that is ethically dubious. Ironically, right up there with Rogue One.

In the battle between Romulus and Prey, cast my vote for Prey. I dont think its very close either. That ending is just bad lol

Yeah, and they telegraphed the bad finale too. When the thing happened, I just thought "damnit, here we go again Ridley".

I still think Ghostbusters Afterlife is for me still the most ethically dubious use of CG.
But yeah, I wasn't in love with it here either. There isn't a great reason other than cheap nostalgia pops to have made it another Rook. Easily could have been ANY other actor as a robot.

I cannot believe the ending. I agree Scott had to be involved. How else can you excuse doing exactly what people have hated about Prometheus & Covenant and then mixing it with Resurrection. Just....wow

Yeah, it was totally Scott. The fact that it very, very much was one his Engineer's head told the whole story. And when people are going to prefer the Resurrection design over your own, you really need to take a step back.

Ok so my thoughts...like I said, I've been a huge Alien fan for a LONG time, I've owned comics, read the books, LOVED the AvP PC games from eons ago, so the franchise has a special place in my heart.

- I honestly loved the throwbacks to Alien and Aliens. Having another Ash android was a nice callback to Alien but I could've lived without it. Didn't take anything away from the movie for me.
- This movie was honestly a back to basics approach to Alien as far as atmosphere/feel. The Xenomorph was scary again.
- To me this is what Prey was for the Predator franchise and I hope it revives interest in this world.
- Ridley Scott REALLY needs to just let go of the franchise. Though it sort of redeems Prometheus/Covenant by canonizing that David ISN'T the creator of the Xenos, it makes me hate those two movies less. Seeing the real reason why/how WY plans to use the Xenos was a nice answer to an age old question.
- The ending definitely reminded me of Alien Resurrection and it definitely ties into Prometheus, I don't have as much of an issue with it since we've known forever that Xeno biology, especially that black goo, corrupts and rewrites DNA. It was horrifying how it was a monstrous version of the Engineers, but again those two movies are my least favorite of the franchise and I had hoped we just ignored it forever. Either way, it was a tense ending.
- THEY MENTIONED THE COLONIAL MARINES. Hearing a form of the iconic Pulse Rifle burst made me grin like a kid. I love how it's a proto Pulse Rifle with elements of the Smart Gun.

I hope we get more Alien movies, there's so much books and lore out there to explore.

The nostalgia quotes and such don't really do anything for me anymore. Not really in any of these types of movies. One line in this movie did make me cringe.

But that said, in the 3/4s of this movie I liked, I really liked it. I also liked the basic approach and focus on the characters over the Alien lore (until ya know...). I loved the way this movie was shot, the sets, the Alien designs, etc. All that was classic and loved it. I even liked the characters. This was very close to being a 4 or 4.5 from me.

That frigging ending lol

I enjoyed this but man the first half of this movie was pretty rough IMO and reminded of me of some of the worst aspects of the lesser movies in this franchise like Covenant and Requiem.

It really took me a while to get invested in these characters and while I liked a few of them in particular Andy who was easily the most interesting and the best written character out of the bunch.

The opening sequence was pretty damn cool though and whenever the Face Huggers, Chestbusters or Xenomoprhs were onscreen I was pretty much satisfied with the carnage that we got.

I didn't even mind some of the references to the other films although the CGI on a certain character they brought back looked awful and really took me out of the movie at times.

I get why some aren't going to love the third act either, but I was honestly fine with it. If anything it makes me want to see more of the worldbuilding within this universe and how they can redeem the prequels.

Also, while its highly unlikely the prospects of an AVP film being setup within this universe could be pretty damn cool as long as they somehow get Ridley Scott less involved going forward.

Bingo.

Romulus was Frankenstein’s monster. Aspects of all previous six movies were stitched together to make a “new” movie.

Prey was at least original.

I mean, Prey had quite a few callbacks to first movie too. While I strongly dislike the final act, the rest of the movie was just as solid as Prey.

I’m sorry but I’m just deeply, deeply disappointed in this movie. As far as I’m concerned the series is out of gas and dead.
