Sci-Fi Alien: Romulus (2024)

I wasn't as wowed by the film as alot of people seem to be .

It's not a bad entry in the franchise , by any means , but I still wouldn't go as many are in praising the film.

Overall , I pretty much feel the same way about this film as First Omen.
It had some nice callbacks , but, overall, not a game changer.

I think a B average grade range is about right .

Kind of at the point were "solid" is enough to be joyful over.

Yeah, I just got out of my showing for it and I don't know how to feel about it. Didn't hate it, didn't love it, but although I feel like I didn't waste my money, I could've waited for this to hit Disney+.

It fell into that trap that most legacy sequels/reboots do by relying TOO MUCH on fanservice and callbacks to the point where it's just a rehash and nothing new is covered.

The deepfake of Ash, the whole cringe ass delivery of "STAY AWAY FROM HER YOU...", the incessant Easter Eggs to Alien (granted they are exploring the Nostromo but still), it was all just rehash and winks only this time with a few more innit actors in the cast. Also amazes me how on a space colony, a brotha who's a synthetic still can't get respect until he's reprogrammed but that's another topic.

Thought the best part was the Xenomorph hybrid, even though people thought it was the third act where the movie went off the rails. That's the only time it did something new.

But yeah, Prey still stands alone.

Can't lie though:
"Why don't monsters like to eat clowns?" "Because they taste funny!"

I laughed hysterically in the back of my theater.

Seeing that same Xeno dead after being killed by Weyland Yutani corporate eggheads in Romulus:

Makes me sad that Prey didn't get this kind of recognition because I know it would have been released in theaters.
That's a movie that had "sleeper hit" written all over it. What a missed opportunity.

Speaking of, and without posting spoilers on my end, we should have a drinking game.

Take shots EVERY TIME a character said 'Weyland Yutani' in this movie, or whenever you saw their logo.

I was low key annoyed at that LOL.

Also, I just wanted to say that I rewatched Prometheus before I saw Romulus today and I haven't really revisited it since it came out. I think most of the movie holds up but some parts felt so wonky and awkward in its exposition and the entire Logan Marshall-Green character was such a misfire. I couldn't tell if he wasn't bringing it or if Ridley Scott didn't give them a lot of room to try out things and improvise.

Still after watching Romulus, I don't know what movie I to rank as #3 between Romulus, Prometheus, or Alien 3 (special edition).

Re watched Alien and Aliens today, they're both amazing films but I just love Aliens way more. Everything about that movie is amazing and makes me feel like a kid watching it with my dad for the first time.

Skipped Alien 3 and going straight into Alien Resurrection now.

I have no idea what “created” the xeno anymore. Black goo? Engineers? Black goo mixed with engineers? None of it makes sense
There's a fansplains essay on Reddit that tries to explain it. Black goo was a bio experiment created by the Engineers that mutated DNA and performed experiments with it and created different forms of life throughout the universe. They created humanity with it, which leads to Weyland wanting to meet them. The black goo was too dangerous as some of the Mutant life it created were too chaotic to control. They seal it away with the lone Engineer to guard it. Human meddling. Weyland gets killed. David becomes obsessed with the black goo and wants to continue the experiments. Blah blah blah. Jesus allegories.

Prometheus is a movie that I think could have used quite a bit of work on the human characters, but David is one of the best things in the franchise and I appreciate the nihilistic ambition of "what if god is disappointing/what if god just kinda hates you?"

I think there's a throw away line about the goo was used around the same time we believe Jesus was born...

Part of me wishes that it was David in Romulus instead of the Frankensteined Ian Holm but then again that means there's still room for him to come back to the franchise.

Either that or give Frankensteined Ian Holm that introductory scene and then kill him off. The fact they kept him on screen throughout the movie was a mistake.

I still need to sit down and watch Prometheus and Covenant soon.

Didn’t one of them have the actor Juicy Smooyay in it? :o

Speaking of Prometheus and Covenant,
it was absolutely hilarious that a bunch of twenty-something scavengers in Romulus made generally smarter decisions than the vast majority of qualified scientists in the last two movies. Replacing Andy's chip because they didn't know any better is still a better catalyst for things to go wrong than the two dumbass scientists f***ing around with the cobra thing in Prometheus or taking their helmets off on an alien planet in Covenant.

Y'know, the bare bones plot of having a station be a lab for Xenos, them escaping, and having Ripley destroy it before it got to Earth would've been a much better plot for Alien 3. Would've been something straight out of the Dark Horse comics, could've used Hicks and Newt, and probably been received better.

Alas, they saved it for Alien Resurrection.

My favorite will always be Aliens (I know Carrie Henn and adore her)...but I thought this was pretty good. Back to the basics and scary...a few cringey lines of dialogue.

My only thing is that...at this point Weyland Yutani scientists are SO inept that I have to believe they are TRYING to wipe out humanity.
