Sci-Fi Alien: Romulus (2024)

That said, I've made it clear in this thread more than once that I think the next sequel should merge the Romulus plotline with David's thread from Covenant. He was too good of a character to fizzle out like that. He deserves a proper ending.
I don’t remember where I read it, but somebody had the idea of a “Island of Dr. Moreau” type premise, with our main characters going to/crashing on the world where David has experimented and made all of these weird creations/abominations in sort of a perverted Creator/God type role.

Building off of that, I had some ideas for what that might look like.
It would be kind of interesting if the film plays with the idea that these characters don’t know who this is by initially making us think that maybe it’s just another character with the same model, and as the film slowly progresses we learn more about this place along with the characters. And, then, it’s finally revealed that, yes, it is who we think it is who we thought it was from the beginning the same time they do as we do in a “We need to get the f**k off this planet!!!” type moment, David releases all of the creatures on them in a chase/hide and seek escape where they need to simultaneously avoid/fend off and get back to their ship.

Maybe, to add a little bit more tension, they set some sort of device to explode and destroy everyone and everything on the planet within a certain amount of time (kinda like Aliens). Also, you could homage the original Alien and Aliens by having David, who you think was completely obliterated like everything else, severely damaged from narrowly making it onto the ship from the blast, breaks/temporarily disables Andy and goes after Rain who now has to fend him off on her own. Then, you could have the surprise of a broken yet still functional Andy helping Rain get David launched out of the ship and into a nearby passing sun where he burns to a crisp and finally it destroyed.

As for the title, going along with the past naming conventions of the last few Alien films (Prometheus, Covenant and Romulus), I came up with Alien: Kronos/Cronos/Cronus. It’s both a reference to the god in Greek mythology who overthrew his father and had children of his own, the famous deities we are all familiar with, who in turn did the same to him, and a sun-like star in our universe, because, in an ironic twist of fate, David is “eaten” by a sun. It would act as a lesson that, despite all of his efforts, he could not surpass the gods and his father’s efforts and was ultimately still prone to and could not escape the same human flaws and mistakes as his creator.

Maybe as a bonus, Rain and Andy discover that Shaw is actually alive, and she could actually tell our main characters who David actually is and what’s going on. It could also act as sort of a primer for people who didn’t see Prometheus and Covenant and need to be filled in.

Long winded, I know, but I had to get it down and thought I would put it out there. Just some fun ideas.

This is looking like the best time for the Alien and Predator franchises since their early era, now at the new 20th Century Studios. I hope they keep it that way on FX/Hulu as well.

“We just finished the script, actually, for a sequel for Romulus, but I’m gonna pass the torch on this one as director,” the filmmaker told TooFab last night on the red carpet at Universal Studios Halloween Horror Nights in Hollywood.

Álvarez will produce the new installment alongside original Alien director Ridley Scott. They’re currently seeking a new filmmaker to direct.

“I think that’s usually what has happened, except for Ridley, filmmakers come, you make one and you pass the baton to the next one,” Álvarez said. “But we wrote the story because we really love what we started with Romulus and we want to continue the story. We love the story, and now we just want to find a director that really wants to go for the jugular.”

Álvarez plans to helm an original film he wrote with Sayagues. “I want to work on a personal project that me and my co-writer, we’ve been keeping on the back burner for a while and we feel it’s the right time to go and work on an original.” He adds, “But I can’t tell you anything about it.”

Take it with some salt, as it’s from Sneider.

Here’s The Hot Mic’s Jeff Sneider who is suggesting Álvarez’s version of events is spin, and that the real issue might be a clash with producer Ridley Scott which led to his firing.

This whole ‘we’re going to pass the torch” .. you have been talking and planning this for the last year. The torch got passed over him. Ridley [Scott] might be bigfooting him. Fede wanted to use Michael Fassbender, and Ridley said no because “I may want to come back to the series,” and if so “I want to be the one who brings him back and uses him. Obviously, who is going to win that clash, Ridley. It was creative differences, let’s put it that way.

It's from Sneider but at the same time I could believe it. As amazing as Ridley Scott's resume is, he's become quite a crabass in his old age. Really disappointing if he pulled a selfish stunt like that.

Yeah Ridley just needs to step away now. Covenant was awful and Romulus was a good revival for the franchise on the big screen. If Fede was fired or moved aside if makes me lose interest in the sequel.

Ridley Scott is under the illusion that just because he directed A L I E N it makes him the arbiter of what the franchise should be, when in reality it was multiple people that were involved in its conception. If it weren’t for them, the film would not be what it is and probably wouldn’t have been the hit that it became. And I say this as a fan of some of his work. Hell, his last truly good film was “The Martian” from a decade ago, and a lot of it being as successful as it was due to Drew Goddard’s script.

The man made quite a few hits throughout his career, and I’ll always respect him for that, but those days of making hit after hit are clearly long behind him and he just needs to get out of the way, sit the f**k down and let the younger and newer generation of filmmakers take the reins. Because, if things like Blade Runner 2049, Alien: Romulus and Alien: Earth are any indication, they clearly have more of a better grasp on the franchises Ridley Scott popularized than current Ridley Scott.

Lord knows we have enough old people in high positions in these current times f**king things up for everyone.

The only reason a Ridley Scott Alien film could interest me even a little is continuing David's story with Fassbender. It was legit the only good thing about Covenant.

He sort of is the author though. Clearly he has the power to throw his weight around. So if the studio is giving him that power, then he has it

The first Alien is the film it is because of Scott. Let's not revise history to fit a narrative now.

If this is true, the character of David is definitely something that belongs to Scott and if he has plans for the character, he should be entitled to live them out. I can't believe people are losing it over a guy whose big achievement was ripping off Ridley, Cameron, and a video game. :funny:

I like Romulus a lot. Enjoyable movie. But you know, whatever. Good franchise to just pass through different hands and give it a different flavour. Those prequels are messy and not great movies, but they are his thing, and if he's still involved and hopes to give it another whirl, I mean sure yeah those are his babies over there. Hope they get someone good next time and I hope they dial back some of the more stupid references and no more creepy CG revivals.

That's called the script. :rimshot:

Scott deserves a lot of the credit but not all of it. It wasn't a George Lucas Star Wars situation where it was entirely his vision. Dan O'Bannon, Ronald Shusset and frankly, HR Giger are big parts of what made Alien great.

I thought Romulus was okay. Derivative with a few fun original moments like the zero-g acid blood scene and evading facehuggers by raising the room temperature, etc. but Cailee Spaeny and David Jonsson sold it for me, and I also thought the offspring creature at the end was pretty memorable. I thought Covenant was a far bigger letdown, especially coming from Ridley Scott himself, which is why I'm less enthusiastic about him directing this compared to Alvarez. Especially with how erratic his output has been over the last decade.
