Sci-Fi Alien: Romulus (2024)

Scott deserves a lot of the credit but not all of it. It wasn't a George Lucas Star Wars situation where it was entirely his vision. Dan O'Bannon, Ronald Shusset and frankly, HR Giger are big parts of what made Alien great.

I thought Romulus was okay. Derivative with a few fun original moments like the zero-g acid blood scene and evading facehuggers by raising the room temperature, etc. but Cailee Spaeny and David Jonsson sold it for me, and I also thought the offspring creature at the end was pretty memorable. I thought Covenant was a far bigger letdown, especially coming from Ridley Scott himself, which is why I'm less enthusiastic about him directing this compared to Alvarez. Especially with how erratic his output has been over the last decade.
I think it's fair to say a lot of what makes Alien Alien comes from people like Giger and Hill and etc... But you know, if they wanted to take a hand in it all, sure. But Scott seems to be the only person still around who wants to stick his hands in it this much. So I'm willing to give him some leeway In wanting to play with his toys - particularly if it's about David.

He's not directing it. Someone new will.

I...hope so? But knowing Scott lately, I wouldn't be surprised if he did it himself. He's got insane work ethic for an octogenarian.

Alvarez said he and Scott are looking for a new director. With what we do know about it being over David and Scott having things he wants to do with him, and Alvarez still finishing the script, I can only assume they came to an agreeable alternate story disconnected from what Scott hopes to do in the future, but not one Alvarez felt passionate about directing anymore.

Star Wars was never entirely Lucas vision. If Lucas had his way the first film would've of been a soft focused, two and half hour mess. There is of course Williams and McQuarrie. This is before we get into Kasadan being the one responsible for most of what people associate with the major characters.

But that isn't the point. We give director's authorship until we decide to take it away because we are upset with them for some reason. Alien has such clear Scott DNA from that time period and I'd argue he is why the film spawned a franchise that still exist to this day*. I think Scott hasn't made a proper good movie in a couple of decades. That doesn't mean his vision should be dismissed for what he played a major role in creating. Specifically, David.

*The main reason Empire is the film it is, is because of all the filters Lucas' vision went through. Mainly Kasadan. And while ANH started the franchise, Empire defines it.

It would be just like Scott to go back to the David idea and direct it himself.

Gloria Katz and Willard Huyck don't get enough credit for their ANH rewrite.

I have the “Making of Star Wars“ book by J.W. Rinzler, and, let me tell you, it’s crazy that we even got the movie that we got. So many moving parts and things that had to fall exactly into place in order to get what we got. Those early script drafts are tough, so many things went wrong during filming behind the scenes, the early cut of the film was a really rough watch, etc. They really chiseled away at and refined everything to exactly what it needed to be. One little shift in the dialogue, performances or edit and this movie wouldn’t have achieved the same notoriety and probably wouldn’t be as good or as popular as it is. This film is a f**king g****mn miracle.

It’s amazing that movies are even made, but even more so when they actually turn out good or great.

Not sure I buy that!
Yeah, if this was true. We would've heard about it a long time ago. :funny:

I don't mind getting someone else in. I liked what Fede did with Romulus but I grew up with the first 4 films and one of my favorite aspects was that each movie had a new director with their own vision and you get basically the same movie each time but different because of who made it, and the circumstances around it.

Don't know much about Rugna but I think getting someone else in makes sense. I think it's always hard to top yourself if you make a second one and by switching things up you get a new guy who wants to bring 110%.

Fellow compatriot Demián Rugna is a great choice, even if I say so myself. He has Fede Alvarez's grip on slow and atmospheric horror. Check out the film Terrified and When Evil Lurks. Creepy as hell stuff.

I looked up When Evil Lurks and this is definitely familiar, pretty sure I've seen this reviewed by someone (maybe Cody Leach?) and it did look great. Might have to watch it.

He's a much better director then Alvarez.

I feel like with this franchise it's less about the directing and more about story/characters/what happens. Like even with some of the lesser rated films you hear people criticize the directing, it's usually certain elements of the story or "characters making stupid decisions" and things like that. Of course I want the next person to be a great director who can give us visually interesting scenes but I want someone with a good sense of "we shouldn't do this" for some things.

Fede introduced us to these characters and made the Xeno actually scary again. That's why I'm sad he doesn't want to return and take things further.

But then he doesn't tend to do sequels in general.
