A billion and some change, IIRC.
For it to have been a retcon, AHTK should have invalidated or altered a fact or event that occurred in IM3. It didn't. Hence, nope.
The Grand Papoose was not the leader (in legend) of the Ten Rings organization that Killian researched, assumed was disbanded and subsequently co-opted. No R-E-T-C-O-N.There was effectively no Mandarin in Iron Man 3 now. Killian could have been called The Grand Papoose....R-E-T-C-O-N
It was a terrible decision and a bastardization of Iron Man's most iconic villain. The people that defended the hokey twist now get to eat crow as Marvel has fixed their terrible mistake. Feels good.
That's exactly why it isn't a retcon! Killian manufactured the Mandarin persona. IM3 never disputed this! But it is a retcon. There is a real Mandarin! Killian was a pretender to the throne now.
Trevor will be the Mandarin. Think of this.
There is a real Mandarin, supposedly, and it ain't Killian. Iron man 3 was said to be an introduction to the Mandarin. Trevor "became" the Mandarin, the role. So Iron Man 3 may have been an intro to Trevor, and eventually adapting that persona somehow and rising to the top? That would be a very interesting take on a villain, don't forget that Iron man 3 was an intro to the Mandarin.
Trevor's already been shown to be an incompetent buffoon, there's no way to double back now and turn him into a criminal mastermind. Like the short said there's a "real" Mandarin out there and he's unhappy with how Killian presented him. Since Killian is dead he wants to make Trevor pay for it.
Perhaps he will pay for it, by becoming the face of the Mandarin? Permanently.
So just rehash what his role was in IM3? Why bother?
I don't know its random speculation on my part, but he will disappear from the public eye (and several MCU films) for quite some time before miraculously returning. His mind will be different and perhaps he no longer will be Trevor Slattery. He will have be brainwashed or manipulated to acting like he really is the Mandarin under the control of the "actual" Mandarin.
That seems like poor writing to me
Despite the fact that I really liked the twist, I completely agree with what you said.

Just realized it's not the first time we've agreed on movie discussions.![]()
Oh, I've seen you alot on these forums (esp. when TDKR came out lol), I don't too often disagree with what you post.t:
I don't think it's pointless. Even if nothing comes from this reveal in the near future. Marvel Studios is all about playing the long game. They're planting seeds, fleshing out the universe, while waiting to see which threads they can pick up and expand upon in the future.
Right now, we know that there is a real Mandarin out there, simmering with rage and planning while he rebuilds the Ten Rings to its former glory... and beyond. Even if those seeds don't take root immediately, it's well worth from a "universe expanding" perspective IMO.
Think of it like Thanos' grin at the end of The Avengers. At the time, most of us we were certain that he would be the antagonist of Avengers 2. The fact that he'll probably make a full fledged "primary villain" appearance only in Avenger 3 did not make the Avengers' tag scene pointless. He's out there "somewhere" pulling strings, trying to position the Infinity Stones into his possession.
I love all of this, and it seems completely "worth it"... to me at least.
Ha yea I avoided this place like it was grim death to avoid anyone spoiling anything, no forum was safe!
I recommend you stay away from TASM2 forums then, unless you're like me (who thinks it looks awful), and need to know what you're gonna walk into.![]()
I'm not interested really, I don't think it looks to appealing but I could be wrong. Even then though I still won't seek spoilers, I'll just see the movie fresh and see what I think then. Don't want to be unfair, want to go in with an open mind.
To risk further going off topic I'll message you or vise versa.![]()
