Part of it is nostalgia of seeing that story first, part of it is seeing more of that story, and I don't like the Golden Age Earth-2 origin.

Shayera seemed to only exist as an extension and reminder of Hawkman. When Kendra became Hawkgirl, she branched out as a solo character and was more than just there to be Hawkman's mandatory love object. She was more than just "the B-side Hawkman, who just happens to be girl-type", she broke out into her own story. She had her own book, I don't think Shayera can say the same, she even came into the picture during a time that Hawkman was absent, being the only hawk-person in books while Hawkman was still dead-ish. When DC got rid of all Hawk-characters for years, Kendra was the first Hawk-hero to bring any of them back, and Hawkman was still absent for years. And she reminds me of a kick-ass Ann Perkins from Parks & Recreation; thoughtful and brilliant, and her ambiguous ethnic blend perfectly represent the dream of the American melting pot (quote Leslie Knope)
