so my car totally bit it the other day, engine just out and died finally, which is alright i suppose since it was kind of on its last legs to begin with. anyways, the point of this thread is, i have to get a new car soon and i was wondering what are some makes and models to look in to? keep in mind i gotta keep my shopping on the cheap, probably 3 thousand bucks max with just a little room to breath. anyone in a similar situation or have any advice to give? i know very little about cars so any advice is appreciated.

Well, coming from a car salesman, I believe that now is the time to go New. Right now a lot of cars are being sold well below retail and are actually below depreciation values right now. I recommend going with American made, do your part in helping save an American institution. If you go foreign, go with Volkswagen.

I would say go new and shop around. The world is your oyster so to speak. Go check out all models and all dealers. I would say go Toyota or Hyundai. They are just built better in regards to the details. Companies like GM have still yet to catch up on such simple things. I'm not sure where they find their engineers.

Now, I worked for GM for almost 4 years. The quality of GM has come a long way. Toyota leads the market with recalls. And Hyundai's "best warranty in the business" is prorated after 50K miles.

Last summer I got an 08 Kia Optima LX. I was very impressed with the quality and features I got for a base model. Best of all, I got the car for $15,000. A true steal for mid-size sedan.

I can back that up. If you go Asian, Kia is really good and you can get a great buy with one.

What kind of car did you have? Were there any problems beside the engine? And if not, why don't you just buy a new engine and have it installed? :).

i had a Ford Escort before and it got me where i needed to go for the most part. but there were a lot more problems then the engine by the end of the whole thing, and it would have cost more to fix it then it did to buy it in the first place so i figured it's time to get something new.

thanks for all the advice so far by the way. i have been hearing a lot about how now is a good time to buy new, so i might just have to delve a little deeper in to that.

Also, given the uncertainty of GM, Chrysler, and Ford, I'd buy foreign. Most are built here in the United States anyway.

Well, it is the 21st century. I would get one of these as soon as they get into production:

Although, with how our economy is...you might end up with something like this:

I thought he said something worth $3k? Lots of people are suggesting 5x higher.

I say support the economy and be a good American patriot. Take the 3 grand and put it down and get a super low payment.

Or just put down 2 grand, save up for the payments and have 1 grand laying around for initial payments just in case you can't make them for putting down 3 grand.

3 grand of the bat does mean lower payments.

Get an Accent.
