Comics Alternate Versions of Characters

I'd like to see a new alternate universe launched and the Ultimate one retired. In fact, they should do that every ten years.

One scenario I'd like is if Xavier were the Malcolm X figure and Mags the MLK and instead of the mansion, the X-men are based at Wondagore Mountain like they were at the beginning of the AoA.

It'd be something to try, I guess.

But, like I've said before, I want an alternate universe where Magneto and Xavier don't even exist. Let the team find itself.

Eh. To me it's still too predictable. The "heroes" (or main characters, anyway) are basically the 616/Ultimate X-Men with small twists. I mean, you've made a few additions, but they're all Marvel Heroes too.

If I designed an alternate universe I'd want to completely re-design characters... Have Nightcrawler be a muderous religious zealot, Wolverine be a completely feral villain, stuff like that.

Why? What's the point of using those characters if you're going to change every single thing about them? Why not just create new ones?

I'd like to see an alternate Warren who is kind of like Sebastian Shaw and had his own team of mutant corporate spies/saboteurs.

Because established characters are what sell books. A Cyclops fan would read a book with Cyclops in it even if he were an evil bastard that killed kittens for money. Same goes for nearly every character.

You change them to get something new and potentially interesting. By making the characters basically knock offs of their 616 selves you get a cheap copy.

And Canemacar- I like the idea. I could see Warren being the leader/mentor/financier of a team.

Just one of my ideas (not very well thought out).

Mutants: a sub species of humans that have been slowly emerging since the 1960’s. Discovered early in their emergence and at a dark time in history, their very existence was hidden and silenced in the only way the government could: termination. Early mutants were eradicated by a government who didn’t have the knowledge or the technology to cope with the introduction of a new super powered sub species of humanity.

However, with time came inspiration. After the assassination of President John F Kennedy, crime across the US sky rocketed. The world had become a far more dangerous place and what was needed was policing. With this revelation, the government saw new ways to deal with mutants; saw problems they could solve. Poverty. Hunger. Disease. But most importantly, crime.

Using their newfound ideas with chilling efficiency, the US government established secret government agencies called the X-Corps. Mutants were forcibly introduced into the X-Corps by the government to form super powered police squads, used to suppress the population and reduce crime and terrorism. The X-Corps status as mutants were strictly hidden by the government and after completing their missions, psi squads (known as Cuckoo Squads) would clear the mind of the public of any display of super powers. The government feared if the information of mutant existence became public, then increased resistance would occur amongst potential mutants and human reaction would be unpredictable. The US government invested its money in technology and psychic manipulation to control the mutants and set up a Think-Tank of scientists for these purposes.

Blood testing at birth was used to indicate the presence of the X-Gene, the source of mutant power, and carriers were processed into ‘The Omega Files’ a database of future mutants. Mutants were used as tools of government, controlled with an iron fist.

But slowly the iron fist turned to rust when the truth of the X-Corps was revealed; that a new species of humans called mutants exist. Newly emerging mutants decided to disobey the government and refused to join the X-Corps. Some chose to run and hide, adopting a flight approach. Others decided to combat the government with violence, to fight for their own freedom and the freedom of those forcibly conscripted into the X-Corps. These groups were scattered but a prominent freedom fighting group was established, the M.L.F (Mutant Liberation Force).

The group consists of

Gravitonne (Fred Dukes)
Fred is an American twenty something mutant with the ability to control gravity. The magnitude of his abilities is proportionate to his mass, meaning the greater his mass the greater his exertion and manipulation of gravity. He can use his abilities to mimic super strength. He ran away from home after the manifestation of his abilities but was briefly captured and experimented on by the X-Corps. X-Corps psychics implanted an eating disorder into Fred causing him to gave into obesity and increase his mass exponentially, in an attempt to increase and utilize his gifts. However, he escaped when his power became critical and destroyed half an X-Corp holding bay but the experimentation has left him endanger of inwardly collapsing due to the massive internal gravity he exerts. Self loathing and conscious of his grotesque obesity.

Pyrox (John Allerdyce)
An Australian teenage mutant with the ability to turn pain into fire he can manipulate, be it physical or emotional. His powers manifested at the funeral of his grandfather and caused many of the grieving family to spontaneously combust, their sorrow and lose transferred into a searing outburst of flame. Guilt ridden and alone, he fled to America and lived as a runaway for awhile, falling into self harming to fuel his abilities. He was adopted into the M.L.F after encountering them in a battle against X-Corps, who had been on his trail since his outburst in Australia. A self harmer with a dark sense of humour, but a keen and ferocious fighter. Immune to his own flame.

Dust (Sooraya Qadir)
An Afghan teenager with the ability to transform her body into a malleable sand like substance that can be hardened, shaped and dispersed by her will. She can also manipulate outside sources of small rock particles which made her a formidable opponent in her home country, filled with desert. She used her mutant powers to defend the women of her village from slave traders but when military insurgents gained knowledge of her abilities they trapped her in her sand form and sent her to America to be unleashed as a weapon of terror. However, her delivery was intercepted by the M.L.F who could hear her cries of psychic anguish and helped her escape her prison. She was a strict Sunni Muslim and wore an abaya with a niqab to mask her appearance from men but she feels that she must no longer hide from men and has adopted wearing a headdress. She still follows her beliefs, but now beliefs more violent way are acceptable if she is to survive.

Mystique
A German mutant of unknown age or true name. Mystique is an enigma both in her personal life and her powers. Her physiology is that of liquid flesh allowing her to morph into others but she also has manipulation of her own density allowing her to harden her skin to a bullet proof hide and become fully corporeal or flow as a liquid weapon. Her reasons for joining the M.L.F are unknown to the others but it is to destroy the X-corps database known as ‘The Omega Files’ which has catalogued her daughter, 16 year old Rogue, and son, 17 year old Nightcrawler, as mutants. She is fighting to ensure the safety her children who he she has hidden in the custody of Destiny and Wither. It is not known to her yet that her children have ran away to join another rebel faction known as the X-Men.

Weapon X (James ‘Logan’ Howlet)
A mutant in his early thirties with the ability to transform into a feral form. This form has increased strength and muscle mass, speed, stamina, durability, highly increased senses, bone claws and an accelerated healing factor. Once married to another mutant named Viper they’re happiness was destroyed when the Government killed Viper, a mutant with the gift of telepathy. James, now calling himself Logan, desires revenge at the loss of his wife and has given into to animalistic bloodlust.

Polaris (Lorna Lensherr)
Lorna, daughter of Erik Lensherr who was terminated by the Government in their phase of eradicating mutants, is a second generation mutant in her early twenties with the mutant ability to control all forms of magnetism. She inherited her abilities from her father who was murdered shortly after her birth. She along with her siblings Pietro and Wanda decided to spread across the country and form rebel factions against the X-Corps and Government to avenge the death of their father. She founded and lead the Mutant Liberation Force. Due to the constant use of her magnetic abilities her neurons are becoming increasingly damaged and Lorna is beginning to suffer from the effects of Multiple Sclerosis, which she is keeping a secret from the group. She is hoping to find and recruit the mysterious mutant known as Elixir to treat her illness.

Bishop (Lucas Bishop)
An African-American mutant in his late twenties with the ability to absorb, store and re-emit various forms of energy. Lucas worked as a normal police officer, keeping his mutant gifts a secret to allow him to investigate the X-Corps. As he rose through the ranks of the law he gained more and more insight into the workings of the X-Corps until he discovered the truth of their purpose and the extent of the government cover up. Fearing for his own safety and disgusted at the corrupt morality he joined the M.L.F as a true law enforcer.

Cerebra (Emma Frost)
Emma is an American mutant in her late teens with powerful telepathic abilities. She comes from a wealthy family and has two sisters, both psychic mutants. Her home was raided by the Government who were looking for mutant to join their Cuckoo Squads. Emma eluded captivity and joined the M.L.F in order to fight for her sister’s freedom. She uses her abilities to safeguard the group from psychic detection and to search for new members. She has minor clairvoyant abilities, as do all her sisters.

Comments?

The premise I can see. People like stories where the heroes are on the run. It adds something to the tale.

The team... eh. I like the originality of it all, I'm not a fan of any of the characters so I'm a little biased.

actually...it pretty good sh_t all around. good job

I vaguely remember some kind of What If comic wherein Gambit was the first X-man and wore Cyke's visor(though he used cards). I wonder how that one played out.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I love the story. It's just that I'm not a fan of the beginning team, if only because I don't like Wolverine, Mystique, or Emma (the latter two as heroes, anyway) in ANY universe. What can I say? I'm biased. :woot:

Eh? I'll have to see if I can't find something on that one.

I'd love to see a completely new spin put on each character in an alternate universe...

Thanks for the comments. I agree, I think Wolverine and Emma are the two weakest characters in there, but I kind of like the idea of having Mystique in there as although she works with the team she is the most brutal of the group. I was originaly going to have Wither and Jean. I think I'll try and re-invent them and see if the roster is any better. I kind of wanted to be a bit original rather than use fan favourites and bit in some clever twists in their powers.

It was Uncanny 378.

I just noticed he still has the fingerless gloves. The visor does look weird on him. Storm also took Angel's place.

Just read part of the issue. Couldn't finish it though. Whoever wrote it (probably Lobdell), made the narration so overly dramatic that it grated on my nerves. That and the Gambit characterization is horrible.

A lot of late 90's comics sucked.

Well, it's not even really a "What if" so to speak. It's an issue during which Apocalypse is ****ing with time, so I think the characterization is supposed to be bad.
