Am I the only one that misses hand drawn film animation?

CGI has essentially replaced 2-D animation in films. They should at least merge the two different filmmaking techniques together to make a hybrid (like Titan A.E., Tarzan, Anastasia). I don't think it should be completely abandoned and I'm glad Disney's making at least one traditional animated movie.

I watched Asterix and the Vikings over the holidays. The 2-D animation was superb and very nostalgic.

You forgot what was probably the most notable use of CGI and cell animation: the ballroom sequence from "Beauty and the Beast".

i love 2-d cell animation far more than CGI animation. those old disney flicks really are masterpiece art works.

I miss it too.. I think more than anything 2D animation fares up much better over time because as CGI advances every year, some of the stuff that was made even 3 or 4 years ago doesn't look as good as the stuff they're doing now.. But traditional animation always looks great.

I don't mind CGI animated films but another thing is that they all seem to be comedies.. especially since Shrek proved such a hit everyone wants to do comedies that parents want to see as much as the kids, there are no actual stories being told any more.. but then again would, say for example, something like the Fox and the Hound perhaps work as well in CGI than how well it all looked and came together in 2D?

Don Bluth was the master.. All Dogs Go To Heaven, American Tail, Land Before Time..

It's a shame his Titan A.E didn't fare too well at the BO.. The Iron Giant too (by Brad Bird of course) is a great animated film and I know the advertising wasn't cracking but possibly came out at the wrong time.

No you definitely are not the only one. I really miss 2D, that is why Im willing to watch the new 2D disney film that is coming to theaters (even though I wouldnt normally watch a film like that in theaters)...its really becoming a lost art, they need to bring it back, I like 3D animation but its annoying how everything has been 3D animation...and Id also like to see more clay animation, or stop motion animation

What is it? I don't know.

I don't miss it at all. It had its time, but you can do so much more with CGI animation, and it's 10x better to look at as well. I still enjoy classics like Aladdin and The Lion King, but I'm enjoying the new generation of animated films just as much, maybe even more.

If you've seen a good, quality, 2D-animated film, how could you not miss it? Sure, the style may look a tad outdated compared to the fancy, 3D computer animation, but I think that's the beauty of it.

You and me both. Although, I think Wall-E really does prove that 3D can be as beautiful as 2D, but I'd take classic Bugs and Daffy over anything 3D. :(

You guys make the most sense with just simple sentences. I agree to both.

Well, that Princess and the Frog is coming this year, and I am honestly excited about seeing Disney bring that art form back. Hopefully it coerces other studios to follow suit.

Thank God for Bruce Timm.

As much as I love Timm's work, his stuff lately really pales in compairison to BTAS and alot of Disney's stuff in the 90s.

Or the 2006 Asterix and the Vikings. Even that animated promo for the Siegfried graphic novel was gorgeous.
