Y'know, hippie_hunters always going off about how he feels all of the Batbooks besides Batman and Detective should be canceled. Nightwing, Robin, Catwoman...all gone. While I'm not quite in favor of all that, his idea, and a few out issues of Detective, gave me this idea...

What if all of the separate Batbooks were combined and condensed into one (slightly oversized) monthly? Maybe have 3 or 4 10-page segments. One dedicated to Robin, one for Nightwing, Catwoman, etc. etc. It could even change every month. I think it could - possibly - be a good way to not only get quality writing for all of Batman's supporting characters (instead of trying to find 4 good writers like they have to now, they'd really only need one), as well as (hopefully) bringing about higher sales.

Obviously, this is just an off the wall, "it'll never happen" thing, but what do you think of it?

Sounds like an good book....

...but not at the expense of others. Maintaining a larger range of titles is a deliberate marketing decision it's got nothing to with what stories 'need to be told' for 2nd tier characters. DC needs to maintain shelf space to stay competitive and a range of choice - and a wider DC universe- to keep fickle customers from crossing over to Marvel. It's kinda the same as when toothpaste companies sell ten varieties when they could do the job with one.

Also, it's easier and more profitable to reach a few sales across a range of titles rather than rely on one title to reach everyone. You 're not putting you're eggs in one basket.

Toothpaste, eggs, sorry I'm probably addressing Hippie Hunter more than you're own post. I agree it could be an interesting book but your details are kinda vague. Maybe if the short stories were on a theme every issue, or part of a larger miniseries.

Maybe a 'Batman Brave and Bold' type thing would work. Every issue is a double-shot of bat-character and/or villains joining for one story. But I know what you mean I think Detective is great right now I'll miss it when it's gone. Would be nice if something similar could replace it.

Yeah, like I said, I'm not one for canceling all of the books either. This idea was just something separate. Something that might've worked quite well in the 70s or 80s. Before anyone thought of having separate titles for each Bat-character.

But that's the thing; it can vary. You could have all the parts of the book play into one big story. Or have each part be it's own "one shot", or have them all have separate storylines that go on for months on end (like most comics nowadays). That's what's cool about it; there's a lot of possibilities that could be explored.

Obvious, if all of the other solo books existed, it would probably be more of what you said...a Batman Brave and the Bold...but it'd still be pretty cool.

There was a Batman Family book in the 70s.

I think it's great idea.
Give it a bit more pages and this idea could't work.

I like this idea much better than what is going on right now

i think its a terrible idea. robin and nightwing and such are great characters. all this idea does is shortchange the possibility of the characters and the possibility of a great book. the solution is to have a good creative team on each book.

For the third time, I do not want the individual titles canceled. This is merely an idea for an alternative or additional title.

why not just put the efforts into getting good creative teams on the individual titles, then?

Because I know this idea will never happen, but in theory think it's really awesome? And hell, if they could find good creative teams for Batman, Detective, Batman Confidential, Robin, Nightwing, Catwoman, and Birds of Prey, what's one more?

well, they have a hard enough time finding a good creative team for even one of the bat family books...

The thing is in my opinion I only like Batman so I don't care for his supporting cast, although those Batman Family stories from the 70's were neat.

Bat-Family, that makes me think all about Peter Griffin as Batman.

That would be freakin' sweet.

Remember the time when Two-Face did the thing with the Penny?

Remember the time when Joker hit my partner with a crowbar?

That wasn't half as bad as the time when...
