I agree in this regard. So far Raimi’s action scenes are better to me. The library fight is my favourite so far from Webb. The bridge scene and the Oscorp finale were quite good. They got the job done. I thought the real strength of TASM was the casting. I’ll sit back and see what Webb does with the action in the sequel, where things should become more expansive, case in point fighting Doc Ock and the train losing its brakes, which I see as a series highlight.

My favorite action sequence is Spidey vs the SWAT team. I also loved the bridge scene but it that scene played more like drama than action (in a good way).

The SWAT fight and high school fight are on-par for me. I'd probably lean a bit more towards the HS fight though since it had some quips by Spidey and the epic Stan cameo.

"Treat others as you wish to be treated...unless it's, you know, inconvenient for you."

lol

People do make mistakes

I always forget about the SWAT fight when talking about fight scenes because I only think of the Lizard ones. I'd definitely say the SWAT fight, with the chase included, is the best in the movie.

I always feel iffy when I see Spidey taking on regular humans in films because there's really no mentioning of Peter pulling back on his kicks or punches when there should be.

In Raimi's trilogy you're clearly shown how strong Spidey is, which makes you assume on your own that he must be pulling back his punches. Not as clearly shown in ASM, but he must be very strong to hold that car.

I think that's another case of when you don't need every detailed spoken to you in film.

But it is a detail you need to be told. At least it's referenced in Smallville wheras it's something that needs to be mentioned in a Spider-Man film. In both Raimi and Webb, it's clear how strong Spidey is(I don't think you can say it's not clearly shown when he kept a freaking car up), but just that detail I feel is always just brushed off when it's a big thing, imo.

Yeah I see what you mean! I don't know how that would be told however without making it an obvious "explain-to-the-audience" scene. It has to come naturally. Maybe while Spidey is fighting some crooks he could say something like "You should be happy I'm pulling my punches for you!".

A much bigger problem is the spider sense. It was very inconsistent in ASM. I never imagined it to work as far away as it did at Gwen's roof. I've always prefered it to be more direct. Which is also why I don't like when it's used as a radar in games.

In the early ASM issues, it seemed like every other issue he mentioned how he was pulling his punches. In live action-not so great. It's kinda on the nose.
Perhaps it's enough that we can assume he's holding back his real strength as he's not killing people when he punches them.

The way TASM handled the spider-sense was just so...blah. It was so wishy washy. Like they couldn't make up their mind on whether they wanted to show it or how they were going to portray it. Much like you've said, I prefer it to be a direct danger-sense. Not a radar or being used the way it was used on Gwens rooftop.

Also wish they'd be consistent with it, not just use it/disregard it when it's convenient for the story (taser and Lizard in the sewer are the most glaring examples).

His spider-sense actually goes off when he was in the sewer and people tend to forget that he was blinded by a helicopter spot light when he was tased. It wasn't convenient for the story since...you know, he was dodging those other tasers before getting hit.

When does it go off? After the Lizard successfully ambushes him?

And it really does feel a little too convenient for the story since earlier in the movie, we saw him dodge bullets fired directly at him, but he can't dodge a taser? Not sure how the spotlight comes into it. The spider sense isn't reliant on his eye sight.

well, peter is still figuring out his spider sense i think. I'm sure it will come into play more in the sequel. But that's one of those powers that you gotta suspend Disbelief on, even in the comics it varies a lot in its effect. He's gotta get hit some times.

It might be cool to have mention of how he has to pull his punches, but I didn't find it necessary for this one since the only humans he fights are the swat guys, and he takes them out in one hit anyway.

There was the moment after he kissed Gwen that he felt his Spidey sense, while hearing sirens in the streets below.

His spider sense clearly goes off just before the Lizard attacks him in the sewer. He reacts to it but obviously not quick enough. He's only been Spider-man for a short while and I'm sure there's a learning curve...his abilities seem to grow over the course of the film. He's not in complete control of everything just yet.

He also fights those thugs in the back alley.

A much smarter route would be someone, such as Gwen since she now knows the secret, ask Peter how he doesn't kill anyone "normal" and thus Peter explains it. Or in any situation where Pete talks to someone that knows his secret. I was actually hoping for some type of conversation such as that in S-M 3 between Peter and MJ too. At least with TSSM, Spidey didn't exactly touch any regular thug; he used his webbing to attach objects then hits them over the heads of thugs.

Yah...sadly, it's just something else that wasn't really given much detail and care in all four Spidey films.

In fact, his spider sense goes off several times in the sewer scene. First when the one of the webs on the trap starts to vibrate and then as he's crawling along the web, right before the Lizard attacks.

Spidey's spider sense is inconsistent in the comics never mind the movies.
For instance, Spidey's spider sense tinglings when he is in close proximity to a villian (sometimes) and that just one of the many inconsistencies.

Yeah but that's another thing if you ask me. The comics have been around for half a decade with loads of different writers. A movie series, with about 3 x 2 hour of film must be more consistent.

But it's so much harder to make excuses for poor writing and direction that wayyyyyyy
