I know this may seem kind of random, and this list is rather old, but I just stumbled across it myself (and, hell, this forum is more or less dead anyway, so no harm, no foul really). Here's a list of several anime series, movies and OVAs that are SF in nature, or friendly to SF fans (such in the case of the latter two). I'm a big fan of the genre and thought this might be a nice gateway outside the usual stuff, since all of these look different and good in their own ways.

Some of this list is unlicensed and after doing some searching it looks like the whole series of Kaiba and the two Kino's Journey movies are available on YouTube. Surprisingly, Dennou Coil was not, but I did a little Googling and found the series on other websites. The rest of them seem to be licensed and available through Netflix (and I assume available where ever else you can find them), except Freedom.

Of the list I've seen The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Kino's Journey (both the series and the movies), and Millennium Actress. I recommend all three; the first is very solid in its own right, and the later two are some of my favorite anime, and really some of my favorite pieces of fiction, period.

So, anyone familiar with these? Feel free to share any kind of thoughts.

The Girl Who Leapt Through Time is a superb film. The Kino's Journey show is pretty decent; I haven't seen the OVAs. Millennium Actress is brilliant, though not one of my personal favorites, and who hasn't seen Ghost in the Shell: SAC? I haven't seen any of the others.

It's a very good if somewhat limited list, as the comments on the article indicate: no Banner of the Stars or Noein, no Serial Experiments Lain--though I haven't even gotten around to seeing Kaiba, so I probably shouldn't talk.
