Surprised this wasn't here.
If done right this could be quite excellent. Hopeful!

Like many of her fans, best-selling author Anne Rice would like to see her most famous creations on television. Whether that happens remains to be seen, but in a Facebook post yesterday, the creator of The Vampire Chronicles said that she has regained theatrical rights to the seminal series of novels that single-handledly redefined the vampire genre in the 1970s and 80s, and is now beginning work on a proposed television series adaptation.

“The theatrical rights to the Vampire Chronicles are once again in my hands, free and clear! I could not be more excited about this! — A television series of the highest quality is now my dream for Lestat, Louis, Armand, Marius and the entire tribe,” Rice said. Rice says she’ll be developing a script for a pilot alongside her son, novelist and columnist Christopher Rice. The pair will also be creating “a detailed outline” for an ongoing show that would, she says, tell the story laid out over the novel series’ 12-installments “faithfully”.

The Vampire Chronicles began with 1976’s “Interview With The Vampire,” which introduced readers to Louis, a French colonial aristocrat in 18th century New Orleans turned into an undead bloodsucker by the charismatic and dangerous Lestat. The book’s sequel, 1985’s The Vampire Lestat, made the titular character the main protagonist and subsequent books have been largely centered on his further adventures, which include exploring the origins of vampires, an encounter with Satan, and in the next installment, due out November 29, a trip to Atlantis.

Theatrical rights were held for years by Warner Bros, which tried twice to launch the novels as a film franchise. The first, 1994’s Interview with the Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles starred Brad Pitt as Louis and Tom Cruise as Lestat, alongside Antonio Banderas, Christian Slater, and Kirsten Dunst. The film was a solid hit, earning $223 million off a $60 million budget, but neither Cruise nor Pitt opted for a sequel. A second film, Queen of the Damned, based on the third novel in the series, was released in 2002. This time starring Stuart Townsend as Lestat and R&B singer Aaliyah in her final film role, the film flopped, taking in just $45 million from a much smaller $35 million budget.

Attempts to revisit the series on film have since then been stillborn. In 2012, Imagine Entertainment began early development of a film based on the fourth novel in the series, Tale Of The Body Thief, but the project was canned less than a year later due to creative differences. Universal acquired rights to the series in 2014 with an interest in bringing Body Thief to theaters, but ultimately didn’t move forward.

The experience of trying to adapt her novels for film seems to have convinced Rice to stay away from the big screen. “As many of you know, Universal Studios and Imagine Entertainment had optioned the series to develop motion pictures from it, and though we had the pleasure of working with many fine people in connection with this plan, it did not work out. It is, more than ever, abundantly clear that television is where the vampires belong,” she said on Facebook.

Fans reaching for bottles of champagne should note however that the proposed television series is still very much in the early, early, early stages. Rice says she’ll be talking to potential producers once she and Christopher Rice have completed the pilot script and series bible.

I'm a big fan of The Vampire Chronicles, so I'm really looking forward to this. It seems like it should follow Lestat starting from when he was human (and The Vampire Lestat was my favorite book, so that would work out well for me).

Oh man, Fueller + Anne Rice? This is going to be so incredibly pretensious.

Was happy to see any kind of update, even happier that Fuller is involved knowing what he did with Hannibal.

Admittedly Anne's work will need a lot of tinkering in order to make it more appealing to the wider audience. While not perfect himself and he lose the run of himself at times, Fuller is excellent on character work. Few out there I'd trust more than him to bring these big personalities in Anne's world to life.

THE VAMPIRE CHRONICLES TV Series; Pilot Is Written But Fuller Is Out

To say we’re looking forward to the TV series based on Anne Rice’s popular The Vampire Chronicles books would be quite an understatement, which is why we’re always on the lookout for even the tiniest bit of news about the upcoming show. Today we have two items to share with you guys…

First off, we learned from Anne herself that Hannibal and American Gods exec producer/writer Bryan Fuller is no longer involved with the project as he “chose to move on” this past February. While we are big fans of Fuller around these parts, there was a small part of me that wasn’t quite sure he was the right guy for The Chronicles so I remain optimistic that this small hiccup will result in even bigger and better things in the future.

Man, Fuller can't catch a break!

Eh I think he only got involved to help them get going, I don't think anyone thought he'd really stay around.

Ann Rice’s ‘Vampire Chronicles’ TV Series Heads to Hulu

Hulu is sinking its teeth into Anne Rice. The streaming service has picked up the author’s “Vampire Chronicles” TV series, an individual with knowledge of the deal tells TheWrap.

Anne and Christopher Rice will exec produce the project, alongside Anonymous Content’s David Kanter and Steve Golin, which has been in the works since 2016.

Paramount TV and Anonymous Content optioned the rights to 11 of Anne Rice’s “Vampire Chronicles” books for adaptation in 2017.

“It is undeniable that Anne Rice has created the paradigm against which all vampire stories are measured. The rich and vast world she has created with ‘The Vampire Chronicles’ is unmatched and sophisticated with 90’s gothic undertones that will be perfectly suited to captivate audiences,” said Amy Powell, President, Paramount TV, in a statement. “The series is full of compelling characters led by Lestat, arguably one of the greatest original characters, literary or otherwise. We are thrilled to collaborate with Anne, Christopher and the team at Anonymous Content on this epic series.”

More to come…

I love Anne Rice (The Vampire Chronicles more so than The Lives of the Mayfair Witches, but Lasher was great) and am happy to see progress on this. I will say that Mayfair Witches seems more like an Showtime/Cinemax sort of thing in terms of how sexual it was. It'll have to be toned down.

My heart sank reading that a little bit. Nothing to do with casting choice but more the setting. Going for the modern setting is crushingly pedestrian but I get it, that's how they appeal to an audience today I guess.

I was more interested in The Vampire Lestat in part because it hasn't been made, but okay. Louis being black isn't an issue, but him being a brothel owner makes me concerned about how he'll be characterized (although I guess him being a plantation owner wouldn't play well in this day and age).

That's what I mean, setting it in our modern day and the inevitable restrictions it puts on the source does not fill me with confidence.

If I remember correctly Anne sold the rights completely after Hulu fell through, so she probably has little to no involvement here?

The closest we ever got to The Vampire Lestat.

On the surface my feeling is no, this is what a casting from CW doing Anne Rice would feel like.

But having googled him I found a production called 'Belle' which helped me see him as Lestat but still, that was 8 years ago.

It's amazing to me that What We Do In The Shadows is at the top of the forum right now when this project seems to not have much traffic, given the former's style borrows from a number of literature including Anne Rice.

Just shows the challenge this show faces to connect and I'm desperately hoping it does.
