Another Pixar sequel... Finding Dory

Pixar and now Disney's animation studio have come to that happy medium, where kids get to have their adorable characters and have fun, while adult get to be entertained by the mature nature of the films. And both the kids and adults get the emotional roller coaster, though on different levels.
It almost felt like Zootopia wasn't for kids.

I don't agree about The Incredibles 2 but I think that the sky is the limit for a Frozen sequel.

One disappointing turnout isn't a slump. Inside Out was a pretty big success.

Some would say they've made other disappointing turnouts, plus Inside Out was there first award winning feature in years.

You can see that in the bland marketing. Hard to advertise a movie to kids with "wanna see this story about systematic racism?"
I would have loved if they would have said that out right in the marketing! :funny:

I actually liked Zootopia's marketing. I decided that Zootopia was an opening weekend must see based on that brilliant Sloth working in the DMV trailer. One of the funniest and best trailers that I have ever seen.

Oh, I don't know. There's a lot of story potential for Incredibles 2 to mine and poke fun at how the superhero genre exploded since 2004. And the 13 year gap didn't affect the turnout for Dory.

I can see both films hitting $150M+ in their opening weekends, possibly more.

I was surprised to learn that for all the praise and adoration that Pixar gets, it only has 1 movie that crossed the billion mark (soon to be 2), while Disney Animation which is always considered in second place, has 2 movies that passed the billion mark in only their past 3 tries.

Kinda unfair to just look at the numbers since there are many years between movies. Finding Nemo for example was released way back in 2003 and made close to $900 million in its original run, without help from 3D and IMAX I would assume and no help from China.

Let's make it fair then. Since 2012, Disney Animation has released 4 films, same amount as Pixar (5 when including Dory). For Pixar, all four failed to reach a billion, while 2 reached a billion for Disney Animation.

Brave + Monsters University + Inside out+ The Good dinosaur = 2.47 Billion Worldwide

Wreck-it-Ralph + Frozen + Big Hero 6 + Zootopia = 3.41 Billion Worldwide.

Disney Animation has outgrossed Pixar by almost a billion dollars in the past 4 years. Point being, Pixar isn't really Disney's leader in animation, not anymore.

It's all under Disney's roof, they are just happy about all that money they are making.

I do now look more forward to the latest Disney film though. Sorry Pixar.

Yes it is. Especially as Disney Animation is now run by the chief of Pixar. :funny:

The Good Dinosaur is an outlier. It is the lowest grossing Pixar movie ever, even with A Bugs Life and Toy story coming out 20 years ago. Finding Nemo is about to wreck the Earth.

What I do like about Pixar movies is that there's never really a villain so there isn't the usual third act final battle. Only movies that have done that are Incredibles and Cars really. Disney movies like Frozen and Big Hero 6 still do that.

Toy Story's three flicks have all done it, as did A Bug's Life. Pixar's flicks do have villains, but they;re more slice of life stories.

 Most of the Pixar films have had villains. Besides Syndrome from The Incredibles, there's Sid from Toy Story, Hopper from A Bug's Life, Prospector/Al from Toy Story 2, Randall from Monsters Inc, the AI from Wall-E, Muntz from Up, Lotso from Toy Story 3, etc.

They are more like antagonists than villains. They don't have some evil plot to take over the world.

Their ambition just has to be enough to detract the hero from their goal.

By not means "bad," but... it's blatantly unnecessary. This was not a story that needed to be told and frankly making Dory (a wonderful co-lead in Finding Nemo) into the straight-up protagonist was the same mistake as Mater for Cars 2. I seem to recall she resolved her memory loss arc in Nemo. But sequelitis in play... so here is it again like nothing ever happened.

Kids will dig it although... the ones at our (full) screening didn't seem to be into it.

Glad to see how wrong this post was. This was not only a better film than the first, but it was Pixar's best looking film since the Incredibles. Absolutely lovely environments, lighting and texturing.

The only thing that pissed me off was that I didn't know there was a post credits scene.

Good movie, but IMHO, definitely not better than the first one.

Also, would have been funny if Dee from It's Always Sunny was that ugly bird, not the Whale lol.

I loved it! I adore all the characters. It's kind of like a dungeons and dragons adventure but with sea life instead of fairy tale monsters which makes it incredibly cooler.

So what's next then. Finding Squishy?

The running gag with Sigourney Weaver got me every time. I even did a spit take with the first one.

So what's next then. Finding Squishy?

That would be tough on Pixar because they'd have to animate the depths of Squishy's psyche.

Squishy is very complex and nuanced.

Yeah I loved the sigourney weaver bit too. You know it's a good film when sigourney turns up
