Anybody know how I could do Flash's speed trails?

I'm designing a series of comic covers for college and was wondering if anyone knew how to come up with the effect that makes it look like Flash's going incredibly fast?

In most of DC comics, they draw horizontal lines with red in the middle and yellow thunder kinda zig zagging through it.
Nobody answered this for ya? how cruel.
