Aquaman's Critical Reception Thread (Rotten Tomato and Metacritic)

Do you think Critics are being too harsh on Aquaman? Do you agree with some?

Says to keep it classy yet throws stones at the MCU, classic. Let it go bro, couldn't post without retaliating?... Incoming "he started it" post.
I am entitled to post to whom I like last I check. That was a response to someone else throwing unprovoked stones. Don't get your panties in a wad friend.

79% is just the percentage of critics who thought the film was a 6/10 or better. The average rating is a more accurate representation of a movie's overall quality. Refer to the greats like TDK with an average rating of 8.6. Or Spider-Man 2 at 8.3. Even the "Into the Spider-Verse" movie has an average rating of 9.0. To say nobody pays attention to the average rating isn't true.

OK, most people don't pay attention to that score. The percentage is what is shown when you buy your tickets online and it's the score you see on RT. It's the most important and talked about score anyway...

Nobody pays attention to the average rating lol. People just see the percentage. Looks promising to me. Aquaman about to squash Bumblebee and Poppins world wide
This. The only part of the RT scores that matters to me is the percentage, and that's it. This film having a 79% boosted my confidence even more, and i was already excited because I'm a fan of Wans work with insidious and the conjuring

I am one happy bunny. It looks like Wan really pushed and took risks and yet even the negative reviews don't say it's a bad movie. A film that took risks is bound to have negative opinions about it too. But you know what else it does? It's memorable, rewatchable and it finds eager fans. This is awesome! The unique, bonkers world is what gives birth to a franchise. And of course I am just deliriously happy about all the positive stuff written about Jason. He is gonna be a huge star and I'm so happy about it!

and I have hated Playlist for years and their review calling it a Thor knock-off is absolutely disgraceful :funny: I love Thor, it's my fav MCU movie but I bet Aquaman is better precisely because it raises the spectacle and action to the level we haven't seen yet in CBM.

But what I am really happy about is that 2018 is the year that really showed how out of touch critics are - they are criticizing stuff that the audience will embrace easily and with glee. five years from now, mark my words, these people will be homeless because no one will care about what they say :lmao:

You're the one who got your panties in a wad about BeatNation's post. Typically people are easily offended by things others say when they believe there's some truth to it. Is that the case, did he strike a nerve?

I am completely content, I promise you that :) I did not say anything to him that should have offended him or anyone for that matter. In fact, what I said was exactly relevant to what he said. He mentions MCU RT scores and how Aquaman did not match up to them. I simply reminded him that in fact there are MCU films that seem to have the exact same score as Aquaman seems to be receiving and some have worse scores. What was so offensive about that? :) I'm literally confused.

I don't know man. I saw Aquaman a week ago and I could bet money that it would be exactly what everyone would want from this picture. The camera work is phenomenal as is the world building and for me it was the most fun I had in a superhero movie since DREDD. Complaining about the drumming octopus is beyond me. It is a fairy-tale. And a good one. It has shades of the Arthurian Legend and it is so much fun. It seems DC does not click with mainstream reviewers. The more reactions I see the more I am inclined to believe that WW was well received just because of political agendas and not because it was an awesome movie... Dunno.

Critics really are irrelevant, TLJ got good reviews because it is SW. WW and Ghosbusters did too because it's female-led. I really hope Venom is gonna be the historic moment where audiences showed them just how little they matter

Critique is always useful and welcomed but for the love of God. It now looks at me like they just have it for everything "genre-like" that is stepping on Disney's waters. It is a very sad day when the critics can only accept formula and don't see anything beyond that.

From my view there's a much larger amount of critics that are closer in view with fanboys/-girls today than before, probably because critics on Youtube and such have gotten much more recognition. A critic that watches so much film will naturally get a different view of film than the average person, but I think that a lesser percent of critics are fancy film snobs today than they were in the past.

Aquaman has gotten a recommendation from a clear majority of the critics this far, and other weird superhero movies like Ragnarok and Guardians of the Galaxy have fared very well, so I don't think they seem that out of touch. Most of the times there isn't an enormous disparity between critic and audience scores either, although it of course happens now and then. I think too many fans are too much 0 or 100 and view a score in the 70s much more negative than I think it is (it's a positive). There's a very good reson why not only 90+ films get rated fresh.

I mean if you are reviewing a movie set underwater and 'ludicrous' is the complaint you have....you should just stop :funny:

I can't believe that I fell asleep. :funny:
The RT score actually higher than what I expected.

But I must admit that I severely disappointed with reviews that said it was ripoff of Thor, Black Phanter.
Come on. Google and Wiki aren't far...
You have a case if it was Namor.
Heck, Throne of Atlantis was just 3-4 years ago. Animated, but still...

People also said that there's review that bring up Snyder randomly to bash him and this movie. :funny:

And I can't understand about critic about how DC heroes so far are thinking highly of their mothers. I mean, many movies are father oriented or patrilineal (with family name pride etc), this is a breath of fresh air, right? To called it 'mommy obsessed' is weird.

Or complaints about CGI heavy and actors pretending to swim.
I said it before, but be ready when Avatar 2 is released and having tons of people comparing Aquaman unfavorably to it. 'Because James Cameron actually shoot underwater!' :p

The best I saw was "Watching this movie is like spending two hours and 27 minutes staring at a gigantic aquarium full of digital sea creatures and actors on wires, pretending to swim."

You don't say... Did you see that in a movie called Aquaman? For the love of god.

Rotten Tomatoes kind of changed the critic game(for the worse IMHO). Before, people just watched the critics that they liked(like Siskel and Ebert) and made their decisions about a film accordingly. Now RT scores can make or break a film even though its just an aggregate of whether or not a critic thumbs up or thumbs down not an actual measure in what they think the quality of the film is. In some ways, we are getting smarter as a species but in so many other ways, we are becoming simpletons.

I know right?

I can’t take it seriously when they complain about the amount of cgi in an underwater movie.

Imagine if wan had decided to base most of the movie on land, the tune would then be “to scared to try underwater environment”. We can never win.

I know it's horrible....but I almost hope Cameron drowns someone this time :funny: This guy has to stop :funny:

Enjoyment is the ultimate factor in my books. I've watched plenty of movies that weren't particularly great movies, but if I enjoyed them I got something out of it. WW was that for me, not the best movie but I did enjoy myself. I have a feeling Aquaman will be the same.

IGN 7.5/10, too much water.

When water actually matters, why it isn't 7.8/10. :wall:
