Aquaman's Critical Reception Thread (Rotten Tomato and Metacritic)

Do you think Critics are being too harsh on Aquaman? Do you agree with some?

we're reaching 100 reviews and we're still most likely going to be in the mid-70s yet somehow everyone thinks some pompous glorified internet troll is in cahoots with 200 other critics and knows what they're feeling. If he spoke to anyone at all it was about 10 critics at most. Yall really need to relax.

I know. I am fairly certain I am being irrationally paranoid, and I do think the movie will likely be well received in the long run. I just REALLY don’t want the ****show that happened after BvS to happen again.

It’s like that feeling when you go on a trip and wonder if you left the door unlocked.
Probably going to be fine, but there is that niggling sense of “what if?”

Really hate how RT doesn't sync up the same for everyone, never know if I'm ahead or behind.

it updates for everyone differently

This is not a BvS scenario, if it was we would have known by now. At absolute worse case scenario this ends with a Thor: Dark World score.

I understand being a DC fan is an emotional rollercoaster ride lol

I just checked (I'm weak) and it is at 91 total and 74%.

In other words...PANIC!!!!!:o:wow:

I have never asked, but why exactly is that? cookies related or region related?
I can't say for certain but yes it might be cookies and browser cache. I sometimes clear my browser cache to help. I notice that I have been updating better than most around here but I won't pretend I know the reason why exactly.

I have a feeling you're being snarky lol! :) Either way what we are doing in this thread collectively is not healthy. We have to take a step back for a few hours or for a day or a weekend without looking at RT

If not snarky, then no need to panic because it was 73 at 88 reviews lol.

I am often snarky yes. I wont panic no matter what. :)

What happened? :funny:
I thought just few hours ago we were having fun with RT refreshing game and sharing our thrills?
I checked RT and actually surprised that Aquaman is still fresh based on the atmosphere. :funny:
We're far from what we were a year ago. :D

You know whats kinda funny? DC's whole "plan" was to quickly build to Justice League and do the opposite of Marvel and have the characters spin off from it and get their solos instead of doing the solos first like Marvel. This was assuming people liked the characters in BvS and JL. Then BvS and JL.......happened and yet the characters spinning off from them are still enjoying big success in their solos. So...in a weird way.....their "plan" is still working despite the big team up movies not. Lol

I think people got bummed when we did not get certification symbol after 80 reviews and started reminding themselves of that pompous A**hole who said there was going to be a wave of negative reviews. I assume that they think that he took a roll call on the remaining 200 or so critics that have yet to write their reviews. Even though we are clearly going to be in the mid-70s when we hit our first hundred reviews.

I am pretty confident that we will say within The 70s range. Anything above is a nice bonus. Next week is open in the us, judging by WOM internationally, it will be a nice open in the US i bet.

Thanks, I get it now.
He's not a psychic and outside of future rottens, there will be many fresh on the way too. One thing for sure is he's loving and revel in our attention.
Aquaman's score could be up or down but better live at the moment. We already out of troubled water y'all. :D

Yeah. Keep things in perspective everyone. I see no reason that the movie will be anything other than crowd-pleasing.

Mind you, that skepticism is still out there... so expect DC to claw its way back to the critics good graces. It just takes one solid movie at a time.

I was actually thinking the same thing the other day. Part of it I think is that the other characters (the non-Batman/Supes) were pretty well liked in those films whatever their role.

And I dont think things are too negative in here..news is just slow so people are overthinking a bit. Same thing happened after filming finished and we heard nothing. Negativity seems to fill the void because everyone wants good news all the time.

Everyone needs to put this all into perspective. Lets say 300 reviews come out for the film...that means if Aquaman gets 70% that 90 reviews are rotten. Since I believe 60% is the "fresh number" that means 120 reviews will be negative. There is going to be plenty of bad reviews no matter the number. You take the good, you take the bad you take em both and there you have...

Long story short...just enjoy the ride :)

I think people are also worried because of what happened with JL last year. Good initial critic reviews, we were all like "PHEW! Ok, looks like this'll be in the 60's or 70's and be Fresh!" And then, there was one critic, I cant remember who, but he, after that initial wave of good positive reviews, popped everyone's bubble. He said something like, (im paraphrasing and exaggerating a bit) " enjoy the praise now guys, theres a ton of us critics who havent put our reactions out there because we dont wanna be harrassed. Well guess what, the calvary's coming!" And lo and behold the following week was an onslaught of "real" critics tearing the movie apart.

Obviously, the climate around Aquaman is not the same as JL's but just putting some perspective into the fear some have.

I could have sworn that with JL the positives werent actual reviews...I dont remember the RT score ever being good just a lot of early vocal people posting on twitter much like now. (though it was a mix of geek critics and fans unlike BvS which was all fans) I know by the time I saw the sneak preview there was no official reviews yet because when I walked out I said to my buddy "I enjoyed that but it is gonna get trashed by critics" for much the reason it did. The mood leading up to release around here was not great mainly cause the guys who had knowledge all said the movie was a mess but was better than BvS which is how it played out critics-wise.

Even if I am remembering wrong there wasnt reputable names out there at this point. Obviously there are more to come (which is why Snieder could be correct) but plenty of known geek sites AND named publications have weighed in already. Not all liked it mind you, but some certainly did including ones that tend to be pretty harsh to DCEU stuff. And again, even if plenty of negatives are coming in the next wave, it isnt going to be all of them so who cares. Aquaman is off to a good start critics wise and the buzz is high as are the early ticket sales. It is also set to make a boatload as it is already crushing in China.

I doubt Disney is sweating that MPR is in the 70s and that is quite low for that project. WB isnt sweating Aquaman right now either. The fans really shouldnt be because honestly it doesnt matter anyways.

There's a lot to be positive about when reading these Aquaman criticism.

They were no where nears as bad as when BvS was about to come out. You know, leaks were coming and they weren't good. And from even the premise of the story... certain DC fans were "Nah... I'm out. Not like this."

Some of us were like..."Nah they wouldn't kill Superman this soon... they just made their universe.. and building JL without Superman? I'm out if they're going that route!" I remember... and so does pepperidge farm.

Totally understandable.
I was here since BvS days afterall. :D
Now that was the dark time when people actually scolded for being positive. :funny:

Heck, few weeks ago I was worried about Box Office and now I feel liberated.
Anyway, I'm having a blast to be able to share excitement and worries with you folks. :D

Not like I am counting :p

Plus 7pm on Saturday is easy to remember ;)

alsnflksfn you're gonna watch it 2 hours before me

It’s less about the influence of the critics score on my own opinion and more about the overall narrative regarding the fate of the DCEU. Critical success really does contribute to that narrative.

I want the story to be “Holy Crap, Aquaman is AWESOME” from everyone, much like it was with Wonder Woman. I don’t want it to be about how the DCEU is going down in flames, which is what the dominant feeling was after the release of all the other DCEU movies. For better or for worse, critic reviews have a part in that.

The RT is a mess to be fair, it feels like everyone sees Feige as this supreme GOD who cant get bad press and all Marvel is praise af, to me this is lame af

Today i found this 2 tweets:

So they removed 1 bad review 'cuz the critic made some racist remarks on Wan

Also, u can see how transparent are some critics that are known to be Marvel boys, same critics doing reviews to Superheroes movies and we have this:

some ***** giving a rotten review 'cuz Aquaman didnt had an "ecological message to the masses.."

And then you go and watch twees from the public who already watched the movie and outside of some pressed bitter Marvel stans, everyone has love it
