Aquaman's Critical Reception Thread (Rotten Tomato and Metacritic)

Do you think Critics are being too harsh on Aquaman? Do you agree with some?

It would have been better if WB had delayed the embargo and the rollout of reviews by a week. If the movie was opening this weekend, it would be going in with a mid 70s score, now there's likelihood it drops in the 60s, with a small shot of being rotten, by the time it releases and most people check its RT to decide whether or not to go.
They were extremely confident due to fan reception from screenings and China. They just didn't expect a sudden wave of haters on RT.

This can be still rotten? Seems really unlikely at 100 reviews.
They have to drop a full 11% for it to be rotten, and that ain't happening. What haters ARE going to use against it is the fact it lost it's certified status. They'll use anything against DC at this point.

Definitely unlikely, not impossible, someone gave the example of how JL suffered the same situation, then there is Sneider and the CMT guys with their conspiracy theory. Either way all this could have been avoided with a simple 1 week delay

I don't think JL after 100 reviews was fresh at all, maybe I'm wrong tho.

Goes up to 72% again.

JL started as a turd then it was going even lower but then somehow it got to over 40%

Let's go ahead and nip this in the butt right now. This is the internet, after all, anything can be looked up with just a few clicks. :)

According to the Justice League Reviews/Rotten Tomatoes thread

Justice league NEVER had a fresh score at any point let alone was it ever in the 70s. In fact, if you read some of the comments in that forum the embargo was lifted rather late to boost presales because warner brothers knew the score would be bad.

The following quote is from a commenter who manage to get some info on the score earlier than everyone else in the thread. This alone derails the idea that justice league was EVER in the position that Aquaman is on RT at any point PERIOD! Now can we all come back down to earth for the love of GOD!

It's at 40% right now, don't know how many critics, the tomatometer is invisible.

Addendum: Refreshed the page, the aggregate of reviewers is invisible again.

Extra addition: After another refresher

Thanks for clearing that up, I was going off of this that was posted earlier in the thread:

I think people are also worried because of what happened with JL last year. Good initial critic reviews, we were all like "PHEW! Ok, looks like this'll be in the 60's or 70's and be Fresh!" And then, there was one critic, I cant remember who, but he, after that initial wave of good positive reviews, popped everyone's bubble. He said something like, (im paraphrasing and exaggerating a bit) " enjoy the praise now guys, theres a ton of us critics who havent put our reactions out there because we dont wanna be harrassed. Well guess what, the calvary's coming!" And lo and behold the following week was an onslaught of "real" critics tearing the movie apart.

Obviously, the climate around Aquaman is not the same as JL's but just putting some perspective into the fear some have.

Also as we all can see Justice league ended up settling in at 40% too. So as far as Justice League goes RT scores shifting wildly as more reviews are added seems to be out the window as well.

Lmao, no I know the RT score started out bad and then dropped. I was simply saying that we all had a little bit of whiplash because initial critic reactions were good. Not glowing but good. I remember many of us thinking this was indicative of a fresh tomato. Little did we know at the time that the critics who posted the initial reactions were mostly from the geek blog sites (IGN, Collider, Screen Rant, Screen Junkies etc.) Aka the ones who were prone to like it despite its glaring flaws. But believe me, i know that situation is NOT the same as Aquaman's.

for sure! And no worries :) I was actually responding to Silver Surfer on that comment but I definitely appreciate you clearing up your position as well. :)

JL started at 42. They held off on reveal for a few days and announced it on their show if I remember.

Interesting how this has the same Metacritic score as the latest Fantastic Beasts, and the same average rating yet has a 33% higher tomato-meter score.

We are satisfied my man.

Just that we are not yet certified and there are many reviews yet to come in.

Aquaman is already a success between us fans and general audience. We do not need the glowing reviews from critics, but we do want to stay in the red lol.

Thinking the smart money is a 66-67% finish at this point

Interestingly enough the average rating hasn’t shifted at all.

I still see a low to mid 70's finish. These are only are only around a third of the submitted reviews. Which will probably total around 300+.
