Are 3D movies getting out of hand?

Twilight is going to be realesed in IMAX.
And they are considering going 3d .
Trust me if those Twilight fans are desprate enough to rally up their posse in order to put Kristen Stewart and Pattison higher on EMPIRE 100 SEXIST STAR list as well as tell more people to watch Kristen Stewarts Joan Jett movie ( it happened at Sundance...), then i think they are also able to ask the fanbase to buy the 3d tickets just to see the movie making more cash.

I do think it's getting out of hand, since now we have movies that were previously set in 2D now being considered to be converted to 3D instead, just so movie studios can make a few more money at the BO. But Hollywood will ride this gravy train until it hits their bottom line, and proved that not every film that gets a 3D treatment will make it worthwhile to justify all these extra cost.

I am a 3d fan but i do agree with your post. Some movies really don't need to be released in 3d such as drama movies or Twilight for that matter.
I think 3d works best with visual movies like blockbusters . And i also think that even with the addition of 3d , you will always have movies which work for specific audiences and movies which work for all audiences. In both cases 3d will help to increase the BO .
3d Didn't take off when Ice Age 3 was released even though the movie performed far above expectations. Even Alice In Wonderland BO performance , though higher , isn't meeting that standard of Avatar. Avatar was a movie that worked for all audiences whereas Alice in WOnderland primarily works for those who are BUrton/Depp fans and/or parents with kids.
Even Clash Of The Titans wont a 400 million grosser. WIthout 3d i think the movie would've probably made around 200-250 mil domestic but 3d it has a shot of hitting 300 ( or more) million domestic. Which is how i think Alice In Wonderland would've done without 3d. I think Alice wouldve performed just like Charlie & Chocloate Factory which ended up making a little over 200 mil domestic.

At this point most movies that are being converted into 3d will simply get an nudge with their BO. It's entirely up to the audience to decide if they like the 3d of Avatar ( seeing depth) or Alice in Wonderland ( stuff flying towards you in a good manner and not like horror movies). My guess is that in both cases audiences will pay the extra money if done right whereas the cheap stuff done in My Bloody Valentine or Final Destination will never take off.

i would pay to see spider-man now i heard ironman 2 might be in 3d. clash of titians is going to be in 3d. i thinkthey rip young kids and their parents off. one day we went to theater to see movie. they charged us four bucks for each pair of glasses. i'm kind of glade they offer not to see it in 3d. me and my mom went to see the christmas coral with jim carry. it wasn't good in 3d about half way thur the moive was dark and you couldn't hardly see anything good in 3d. i think they rip little kids and their parents off. idon't under stand why couldn't youjust keep theglases then use them later. i think they just wont to make money off. i liked Avatar was good in 3d.

It will be interesting to see how Clash of the Titans performs. If it's a huge success at the box office, I can easily see WB forcing Nolan to convert Inception to 3D. :cmad:

Oh please :whatever:
Do you honestly believe that ? At this point everyone at WB is falling at Nolan's feet. He's made them a billion dollars and WB has given him carte blanche to make his mind rape movie. Nolan has always been critical of 3d and WB isn't going to force 3d on him. The only person to allow Inception or for that matter any future Nolan movie to be shown in 3d is nolan himself.

I think it is too late in the game to put Iron Man 2 in 3D, though.

some theaters are starting to force us into 3D.

3 showings of Alice 3D in and 1 ( one) showing in 2D. and not after 1 or 2 weeks when it got popular. from the beginning.

again from the beginning. on the first day they had only 1 showing in 2D. and at what time? at that time that there is a 90% chance that you wont watch it because its crazy.

so i am starting to get scared. i am afraid that in the future studios will realese bad 3D and only show it in 3D. so the only way for me to watch a blockbuster in theater will be in bad 3D.

This is the problem. First weekend Alice in Wonderland played at my local theatre, which has 10 cinemas I might as, 5 screenings in 3D, 1 in 2D, and at 11.00am of all times too, I mean who's got time to watch a movie at 11.00am?

For the better part of it yeah, they are.

They just think 3D will would make the film better or make more, no matter what the film is.

It's overkill now, some movies that dont need to be at all being 3D just for an extra buck.

they dont think that it will the movie better . it will make them more profit

that is the only reason why they spend 8 weeks on Clash of Titans 3D. 8 weeks? this is an insult to me. they spend more time on choosing what food they will have on the set when they film. food..

Hell, most movies don't even need to be in 3d. But you can thank both Avatar and Alice in wonderland for this. Cause you know that was a big factor into making more into 3d.

Make no mistake, this has everything to do with making more dollars and nothing to do with making better films. It's the same mentality when Pixar movies became successful, the mindset was that no-one wanted to watch hand drawn animation anymore and so all the major animated films became CGI, neglecting the most important aspect as to why Pixar were successful: the story. Avatar may have started something but it's going in the wrong direction.

You might have spoken too soon.

It's pretty clear that WB doesn't give a damn. It's all about the money.

Major studios and corporations make money a high priority: more breaking news at 11! :funny:

I'm not a bit surprised by it. I said it earlier in the thread and the Matrix guy responded by claiming that WB wouldn't dare mess with what Nolan wants. WB owns the movie. That's just the way it is.

''Horn also spoke out against the criticism of converting films to 3D in a post production process. He said that “in our opinion, conversion to 3D doesn’t lessen” the 3D experience. And he said that audiences will decide when Clash of the Titans is released in 3D in a couple weeks.''

this is what i was afraid. he thinks that 8 weeks is enough.

Especially after many 3D films were being made well before Avatar came out.

I'm indifferent to 3D movies really, but IMO, it isn't so much the 3D that's getting out of hand as much as studios making everything in 3D just for the sake of it.

Warner Bros will be releasing five movies in 3D in 2010 and nine movies in 2011.

Later in the presentation, while introducing Christopher Nolan’s Inception, he called the movie “a grand scale film”. It is definitely being set up as a tentpole movie, but it remains unconfirmed if Nolan’s film will also be converted to 3D. They definitely have the time, as Clash was converted in a record three months.

Again if , like you said , they didn't give a DAMN they could've easily janked away Inception from Nolan , decide to convert it in 3d and include it in the press release when it was announced that Clash OF The Titans and Potter were going to be released in 3d.

And going back to the original link . WB said they were converting 5 2010 movies in 3d.
Those are
Clash OF THe Titans
Harry Potter & Deathly hallows prt 2
Guardians Of ga Hoole
Cats & Dogs : The Revenge of Kitty Gallore
And Yogi Bear

Don't believe me. Do google check on all those movie and you'll see that they are either made in 3d or converted into 3-d

His 'opinion' is wrong, Alice's conversion to 3D is proof of that. If us as patrons keep paying for it they will continue to make them, we have to nip this in the butt now, we need some sort of grass roots internet campaign or something. It has to start with Clash of the Titans.
