Are 3D movies getting out of hand?

It will fizz out when people get used to it and realize 3D won't enhance the plot of a bad movie.

Yeah. Just like movies in color.

Real life is in color, and real life is in 3D. Which is why this will probably be around forever.

Clash of titans needs to fail. it needs to bomb. WB is one of the biggest hollywood studios. they have a lot of franchises. it will be a disaster if every movie from them has bad 3D.

wouldnt it be great if somehow everyone was able to get there hands on free tickets and the movie ends up tanking in sales but the shows still sold out. that is the giant scale F U to the studios I want to see happen.

I think word of mouth will spread fairly quickly about these fake 3D films...and more and more people will stop going to see them in 3D.

Real life doesn't cost extra and require specialty glasses to be seen in 3D.

3D has been around since the 1950s and has spikes of popularity, so it's obviously not going away permanently. But it's also being used willy nilly with variable quality. One of the reasons that 3D is different from color is that the Technocolor folks put a lot of restrictions on the technology at first and made sure it was used in an artful way for the first decade or so. There's no quality control on the use of 3D which is one of the reasons that people are likely to get tired of it. Combined with the fact that the glasses really aren't that comfortable.

When they make technology where the film is as 3-Dimensional as real life and doesn't require accessories to view it with then I'll agree. Until then, it's stuff popping out of the screen and nothing more.

How to Train Your Dragon 3D opens today at my local cinema, 9 sessions in 3D, 2 in 2D at 10.15am and 5.00pm. We are not being given an option here.

I have a mega theater with 13 screens, so there are a bit more times for me for 3d films.

They have 5 showings for 3d and 5 showings for 2d. And they still have 5 showings for Alice for 3d and 5 showings for Alice in 2d.

They need to perfect it yes. But colored movies and tv started out slow and needed much improvement as well. Though I agree it won't really explode until they get rid of the accessories that you need to watch it.

TV's in color used to cost extra. So that point is moot.

As far as the glasses, I agree. Once they get rid of that aspect, it will be everywhere.

If there was ever a time to ban 3D it's now. I just checked the nearby AMC and they raised their prices from $12 to $15. Insane.

This will come back and bite Hollywood in the arse for the simple fact that price hike is gonna be too much for some people.

I went to the movies and the prices changed slightly. It went from 7.25 to 7.50. I mean its not much, but every couple years they bump it up a quarter. And that was a matinee. a regular showing is now 10 dollars. While matinee 3d is 11 dollars and regular price showings for 3d are 13.50.

I saw in Philly the prices are 11.00 dollars and tack on another 6.50 if you wanna see it in IMAX.

I saw alot of kids either waiting or going to see that Dragon movie in 3D. So as long as parents pay the prices its gonna continue.

I haven't seen any 2d showings for clash of the titans yet. If its only 3d i'm not gonna see it.

It is getting out of hand but it's understandable from a business standpoint. More people are going to the theaters because it offers an experience that can't yet be replicated at home. So as a result the film studios and cinema chains are making more money from tickets plus the other thing is that 3-D movies are harder to pirate.

Hopefully they will be able to keep the option of showing 2D versions because i know i don't want to see some of the upcoming announced 3D movies in 3D.:o
Get ready for 3D price hikes. 30-40% higher prices wasn't enough, they want to go even higher.

Wow, that's quite a price spike!

But by comparison, depending on what cinema you're visiting, the prices they charge in the states are still lower than the ones we pay here. At my local cinemaplex you pay 9 euro for a ticket plus 2 euro extra for 3D. That's excluding any reduction you could get from student/college passes, CJP or other reduction cards.

I've only seen a 3d movie three times, all at the same theater and this is how much it cost me.

Avatar weekday (December) - $12.00

Avatar 2nd time Weekend (January)- $14.00

How to train your dragon weekend (March)- $14.50

So watching three 3d movies cost me 40 bucks.

and also My theater boosted their 3d tickets 50 cents more After Avatar. Damn Basterds! :cmad: :csad:

Okay, now this 3d garbage has gone to far, when certain theaters decide to not even play the 2d version and only 3d. Like they are dong at my theater with clash of the titans, 3d only and zero screenings for 2d, which is complete and utter bulls**t if you ask me, basically forcing people to see it in 3d. Well I for one will not stand for this and even if i wanted to see this movie, I'm not gonna cave and give in to their demands. The People should have a choice on whether they wanna see it in 3d or not. WB better not pull this crap with all their 3d films coming out in the future.

We haven't hiked up our prices for 3D movies for a while now. Our prices are still the same ($3 surcharge for 3D), the last time we raised regular ticket prices was probably late summer/early fall last year. I do expect the chain to raise prices around summer time, probably when Toy Story 3 comes out.

Oh, and we're only showing How to Train Your Dragon in 3D, so families looking to save money will have to go to our competitors.

I just want more options for regular 2-d. I hate how the colors look saturated through the glasses and honestly, wearing 3-d glasses for 2 hours just to see 15 minutes of actual 3-d isn't worth it.

Can any one help me.

Which movies coming out this year are REAL 3D, and which ones are FAKE 3D?
I know Alice in wonderland and Clash of the titans are fake, any others??

Its like the IMAX - LIMAX fiasco all over again. hahaha

Fake 3-D:

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part One
Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader
Gulliver's Travels
Cats and Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore

Real 3-D:

Saw VII 3-D
Tron Legacy
Toy Story 3
Legend of the Guardians
Shrek Forever After
Megamind
Resident Evil: Afterlife
Despicable Me

Hmmm. I might see Tron Legacy and Toy Story 3 if they are real 3D.

CGI movies dont count because they are all real 3D.
