Recently, Aster was interviewed by the Associated Students Program Board at UC Santa Barbara. And during the interview, he discussed his previous film work but also teased what might be coming in the future. While he didn’t go into immense detail, Aster did say that his next project is a “nightmare comedy” with an extended runtime.

He added, “All I know is that it’s gonna be four hours long…”

Of course, it’s unclear how serious Aster is about the film’s length, but considering he did release a 3-hour cut of “Midsommar,” there is precedent to show that the filmmaker doesn’t have much of a problem testing the endurance of film fans. As for what we think the picture might be, his description of the project as a “nightmare comedy” does gel with what he teased last year.

Ari Aster Says His Next Project Is A 4-Hour "Nightmare Comedy"

Lort.

YES, yes to all of that.

He made a short film called Beau. I wonder if this will be a feature length version of that, or something similar.

OMFG

Film fans, prepare for a splendid collaboration between two icons. Joaquin Phoenix is in talks to star in Ari Aster’s upcoming film Beau is Afraid.

Per sources, the film was described to me as a surrealist horror film set in an alternate present. If Joaquin Phoenix signs on, he will play the lead role of Beau. Beau is described as an extremely anxious but pleasant-looking man who has a fraught relationship with his overbearing mother, their relationship is affected from the fact that he never knew his father.

This will likely be Ari Aster’s next film with the project said to be a priority for himself. He will write, direct, and produce the film with the project set to go through his production company Square Peg.

Hah, that's awesome.

So it's a horror movie now, instead of a comedy?

Ari Asters did call The Lighthouse a comedy, so make of that what you will. :funny:

Still curious to see this though.

The description definitely sounds a lot like the short film.

Trying to imagine a 4-hour version of Beau. Um. Yeaaahh...

Joaquin Phoenix To Star Ari Aster’s ‘Disappointment Blvd.’ For A24 – Deadline

Hereditary helmer Ari Aster looks to be heading back to the home that helped launch his career. Deadline is hearing that A24 is set to finance and produce his new film Disappointment Blvd., with Joaquin Phoenix on board to star.

Details are being kept under wraps for the project written and directed by Aster, but the plot is described as “an intimate, decades-spanning portrait of one of the most successful entrepreneurs of all time.” Alongside A24, Aster and Lars Knudsen will produce under their Square Peg banner.

Are the two the same projects?

This **** still gonna be four hours?

Between this and the Snyder Cut, pretty soon every movie is gonna be 4 hours. Get used to it Sawyer!

Based on the plot description, this doesn’t sound like Beau is Afraid.

Yeah it sounds like a completely different project. Either this one got tabled in favor of Disappointment Blvd, or the original story was wrong.

Disappointing, but I'll watch whatever Aster makes.

Judging by the reports, it does seem like this project has replaced Beau is Afraid.

I really don't want to sit through a 4 hour Ari Astor movie. The man is a great director, but the original Midsommer cut was fine the way it was.
