Screenname of the Proposed RPGs Game Master:
Keyser Soze
Do You Have An Instant Messenger that we can reach you on for better conversation? (i.e MSN, Yahoo, AIM, ect.) And if so, what is your screenname?:
I have MSN, most of you have added me already!
Gamemasters/Assistant Gamemasters already chosen:
I have Electro UK onboard as an AGM, but would like one more to round out my team.
How will the overall layout of the RPG be?:
It would be ongoing, running as long as the idea had legs.
Premise of RPG, if it is a user created RPG see below for applicable additions to this Applicaton, (Must be a paragraph or longer):
In a game that would serve simultaneously as prison drama and horror, the Arkham Asylum RPG would invite players into the world's most famous madhouse.
There is no Batman in this game. Instead, this RPG would focus on the lives of the staff, the guards and the inmates of Arkham. To ensure a fair balance between good and evil, it would be compulsary for every applying player to choose both an inmate and an Arkham employee to play. However, for both staff and patient, players would have the optioning of choosing either an existing character, or creating someone new. But your choices needn't be a long-term commitment. One of the games strength's is that it can work with a revolving cast. Tired of writing your inmate? Have them escape. Bored with your doctor? Kill them off!
But that's not to say the game will be all about escapes and riots (though there will be some down the line, I'm sure). I'm aiming for a more slowboil approach to writing, with us all working together to flex different writing muscles than usual, and build up a steadily escalating sense of dread rather than just having outright, constant carnage. Something else that I feel will set the game apart is the instillment of routine, giving different character types specific roles to fulfil and limitations to work with. There are three main character types:
DOCTORS
Of the psychiatric or medical variety, doctors largely operate outside the grubby goings-on of the asylum. They are kept isolated from major activity hubs like the patient canteen and rec room, and the holding cells. Their role in the game is largely played out through their sessions with patients. A doctor has the power to call any patient not currently being seen by another doctor to a session at any time. A guard will then escort said patient to the doctor's office/ward. What the doctor does in that session is up to the player. Patient interviews and therapy, perhaps, to allow you to engage in extensive conversations with other players? Radical therapy like shock treatment? Or perhaps you're secretly a lunatic who likes experimenting on patients and cutting them up? Your choice! Doctors also have the perk of being able to go outside the asylum and have storylines continue in their home or out in the city.
GUARDS
Guards have more freedom than any other type of character. They have access to the whole asylum, from the isolated staff areas to down in the grime with the nutcases. When patroling the secure areas of the asylum populated by the inmates, the guards have access to lethal weaponry, which they are to use at their discretion. This combination of weaponry and access makes the guards the real power-players in the game. Corrupt Arkham staff would be well advised to recruit the guards to ensure the success of their underhanded schemes. And inmates planning an escape might want to bribe the guards to set up an inside job, and get them to the places they want to go. Guards also have the luxury of leaving the asylum to continue their stories at home or in Gotham City.
INMATES
The one everyone wants a part of. It is the inmates that make Arkham famous. Everybody will be playing one inmate, and its up to you if you want to be one of the iconic residents like Joker, Two-Face, Scarecrow, Poison Ivy, etc, or if you want to make up your own crazy. But don't think it's all glamorous bloodshed. Life as an inmate in Arkham is actually pretty crap. You'll have a lot of restrictions to deal with. When you're locked in your cell, you're stuck in there with nothing but your thoughts to keep you company until a guard lets you out again. When a doctor calls you for a session, you have to go. Even when you're out roaming around the asylum, you're restricted to the secure areas: the canteen, the rec room, or the showers for some light anal rape. Oh yeah, that's the other thing. The guards might not always be around to keep order, so in these areas it's possible for fights to break out, and people to get killed. Or if you're feeling more productive, these places make the ideal venue for inmates to get together and start planning an escape. But here's the kicker: if your inmate escapes, they're out of the game. This RPG is not a Batman RPG, it's an Arkham RPG. So we're not interested in seeing you go out and commit crimes and be caught by Batman. So once your inmate is out of Arkham, he's out of the game. Until he's caught and sent back, at least...
What will this RPG bring to the RPG forums? (please write two complete sentences):
What I think the Arkham RPG will bring to the forums that the other Batman RPGs didn't, is a game freed from the inherent flaw of being built around Batman. All these previous games put a lot of pressure on one player - the guy playing Batman - to be everywhere at once. By removing him from the set-up, I think the game could play out very differently.
The Arkham RPG will also bring a different kind of storytelling to the RPGs, if it works like I hope it will. It's a chance to experiment with a different pace of storytelling, bringing us all together to work on building character and atmosphere, rather than relying on the old fight structure. It might not catch on, but if it does I think it could really take all our writing to the next level.
