Armond White Says ‘Crystal Skull’ Is Better Than ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark,’ Paul W.S.

Additionally, while the whole "achieving its goals" argument is one I often subscribe to, I don't believe films can wholly be judged just in terms of it story. Its vitally important of course but film is a form of story telling and success in the form is important. Otherwise why not just tell the story another way? Just as a movie can be impeccably design but be empty, a movie can try to tell a good story but be hampered by amateurish production.

Nobody mentioned story, though. I keep mentioning the word goal 'cause it's broad enough. I want to laugh when I watch a comedy. Personally my sense of humour is brought enough to be laugh with Monty Python, half of Will Ferrel's movies, TED, Southpark and Don't Mess With the Zohan, 5 very different kinds of comedies with different styles and certainly different stories.

And you're very right about a production killing a good story. Off the top of my head, The Main in the Iron Mask ('98).

Comparisons to what end? I mean, then people will eventually figure out a way to compare This is 40 to Thin Red Line.

Hence "comparison", not comparison.

A tangible end would be: Someone asks me which movie to watch during the weekend and I can recommend a movie or not depending on his tastes. If he's torn between the Master and RE5 'cause he doesn't mind genres, I can tell him which movie succeeded in what it was trying to do and which one didn't, always with the disclaimer it was my own personal opinion.

But even without "comparing", the "achieving the goal" argument is a very decisive factor to liking a movie or even an artist.

so with his take on things does he appreciate 2012 over the fountain?

If he found the Fountain a failure with regard to what it was trying to say and 2012 a success with regard to its goals, then I guess the answer is yes.

Err...let me just say, as a fan of Paul W.S. Anderson....his movies are sexy visually...but the man is nearly Uwe Boll bad with the scripts...and yes, Uwe Boll at times has that nice eye and gets good DOP in some of his movies, but I take W.S. in the B-movies with big/modest budgets dept.

That said, may wait for DVD for newest RE.

Mortal Kombat
Soldier(!)
RE1
AVP

In that order...top 4 movies he has made. RE4 really only has that fantastic short video game cut scene fight between Wesker and Co...and that dude playing Wesker, yes, may not be old enough, but nearly perfect.

AVP is better than Promesthus...then again, I am bias cause I like the book based on the movie...which if THAT was the AVP movie, it be NC-17 and 2 1/2 hours long...:woot:
